Eric: Hey everyone and welcome to BFX the podcast dedicated to DIY movie making. This week we are building a dolly.

Eric: I would like to welcome Jared master builder, film dude, and all around tool belt.
Jared: That is actually my official title here too.
Eric: It is true. This Jared’s dolly design so he is going to head up to build and spin the wheel to determine our budget.

Jared just informed me that he needs the maximum $50 budget or he will cut me with his large scary knife.

Jared: For wheels, I ordered pneumatic casters to affix one squabble. We also gathered a hand full of carriage balls with nuts and washers and some long dry welters.
For lumber I grabbed a scrap piece of three quarter inch plywood I had laying around and a 2x4. now if you do not have a scrap of plywood laying around do not worry too much about it you can go to most hardware stores and they will sell you a quarter and half sheet for pretty cheap.

Eric: I would like us all to take a moment of silence while filming this episode someone very close to me passed away, my hard drive, I only bring it out because we lost all the footage I shot close up while building the dolly. Sorry.
To start with your scrap plywood, ours was 28x38 inches. At one end of the platform cut off the corners using a roughly a 45 degree angle. Bolt your two fixed wheels to one end and the squabble wheel to the pointy end.
Now it is time to build the handle. Build a small box at the pointy end using 2x4 slides in a two and a half foot length of 2x4 into the box and secure with screws. Then screw in the T bar into the top. Finish out with an eyeball mounted near the middle of the deck.
This week’s test film is being guest directed by Columbia film studio and personal friend Bobby Miller.

So now, you know how to build a dolly but you need to know how to use it. No problem.
Bobby: So watch four-minute film school this Friday to learn all the cool dolly tricks.
