Male: Is there anything you could recommend, the everyday type of low back pain people get to their sleep the wrong way or the wrong pillow, the wrong mattress, are there any suggestions we could get, some are so terrible they have to see you but in case you get that low back, or pain, I think I slept the wrong way. What can we do to maybe make their life a little bit better?
Dr.: You know I am a big believer and I always tell my patients, “Treat yourself, like with an athlete, so you get that strain back” and the best thing to do is to wake up in the morning, take a good hot shower. Put some icy heat on, stretch. Do stretches and light walking through the day. I am a big fan of naproxen. I think naproxen is a great drug as long as you don’t have any cardiac problems. Just naproxen around the clock for the first week and then at the end of your day, a nice ice pack before you go to bed. And getting this habit on a daily basis and usually that will get people through your average lumbar strain and back problems. Of course, you know, you have to also look at what you have done to do that and sometimes you have to do modifications of your daily activities or the things that are causing it. Maybe the way you sleep, the type of mattresses, most things also have to be taken a look at.
