Managing Bipolar Disorder.
Dr. Kay Jamison: I deal with having a very severe bipolar almost by being weary, by trying to keep up with the science in my field of my illness, by taking medication faithfully. If I have questions, calling my doctor, getting regular sleep, trying to prune out of life, people who are not helpful to my life or happiness or illness, I think that's a general kind of philosophical and practical point in life in general. But it's probably practically true if you have an illness that is life-threatening that you need to be careful of whom you surround yourself with.
I am very fortunate, I've great family, I've great colleagues, I have great friends, but I see in other people sometimes the tendency to have a malevolent people in their lives, and that isn't helpful. But always, read as much as you can, learn as much as you can, really get sleep, I mean sleep is incredibly important in bipolar illness and people don't take that as serious as they should, like all the usual things, bring great joy to your life.
I mean there is a tendency to be role the passive about joy and I think that is really important to figure out things, if you really love the zoo or galleries or walking or whatever to do that as much as you can to be very proactive about bringing pleasure.
