Lyle Hurd: Sherry, we’ve been talking at some length about Suntheanine L-Theanine
and the broad spectrum of benefits that it has. I understand that it’s also
very effective for weight management. Can you explain how Suntheanine
L-Theanine interacts with weight management?
Sherry Torkos: Well, we do know that stress is a factor that has been associated with
weight gain and obesity and there are a few reasons for that. When people
are stressed out they often have cravings for carbohydrates, for comfort
foods; they might want their macaroni and cheese or their potato chips or
their cookies or cakes, especially when they’re are undergoing a lot of
stress. But stress can also increase the level of a hormone in the body, a
stress hormone called cortisol. And, researchers have found that when
cortisol levels are high that can cause you to pack on more fat around the
belly and you get that belly fat storage. But the third factor connecting
stress with weight gain is that when people are under a lot of stress they
often have difficulty sleeping at night and there have been several studies
that have found not getting enough sleep at night is connected to obesity.
And, the reason for that is when you’re not getting enough sleep at night it
can increase levels of a hormone called ghrelin which can make you
hungrier, it can increase your appetite.
But also, if you’re not getting enough sleep at night you could be missing
out on optimal production of human growth hormone and that’s important
in regulating your metabolism. So, if you’re not getting enough sleep that
can lead to hormonal changes which can cause weight gain. So, those are
the 3 factors associated between stress and weight gain. First, is that you
have more cravings, you have a greater appetite, you eat a lot of comfort
foods. Secondly, stress increases cortisol levels and that can promote belly
fat storage. And thirdly, when you’re stressed it tends to impact your sleep
which can impact your appetite and metabolism. So, I think it’s really
important for people that are struggling with their weight to look at a
holistic strategy which does involve stress management. And, for stress
management—we’ve talked before about the benefit of Suntheanine, it’s a
substance; it’s an amino acid present in green tea which
can help promote calming and relaxation and really take the edge off
stress. So, I think that there is a benefit in taking Suntheanine to manage
stress associated with weight gain.
Lyle Hurd: That’s pretty interesting.
Sherry Torkos: Yes, it’s fascinating stuff. Suntheanine, unlike weight loss products, it
doesn’t increase your heart rate. In fact, if you have a high heart rate it can
actually calm you down and slow down your heart rate. It can promote this
feeling of calmness and relaxation. It really has no negative side effects at
all. So, if you are concerned about body weight, again, I would suggest
looking at a holistic approach, a healthy diet, regular exercise. For stress
management I think exercise is beneficial but also taking Suntheanine as
the L-Theanine can help promote calming and relaxation and really take
the edge off that stress which could be driving your problem with weight.
Lyle Hurd: Most of us have those problems. I would suggest that everyone look into
trying Suntheanine to help them with them.
Sherry Torkos: Yes, I think there are some significant benefits there.
Lyle Hurd: Thanks.
Sherry Torkos: Thank you.
