Dave Epstein: Hi! I am Dave Epstein work when you growing wisdom. I am here with Ian Manning of sports and physical therapy associates. And where we are going to be talking today about proper use to some of the tools in the garden in terms of the way we use our back and our knees and our hands so tell us about raking.
Ian Manning: I like to tell people think of it like a dance. Do not just use your arms because everything gets tired. You want to use your bigger muscles being your stomach and you legs. So every time you rake shift with the rake, shift into it and shift back. Using your legs as pivot points where it is just pulling with your arms. With the bigger shovel, which you want to do when you go to scoop it up, do not you scoop with your legs tray when you want to actually get down with the shovel, scoop it and then lift with your legs not down and lift with your back.
Dave Epstein: Alright, so Ian when I am down in the garden here and I am doing some of the smaller things. I like use my smaller tools. What can I do that really mitigate problem and sort of the hands, the wrist and I guess my forearms?
Ian Manning: Well, I like said before using your legs over your back, you want to use your bigger muscles over your smaller muscles. So if you doing a type of raking, you want to make sure you use your whole arms to pull not just your wrist. With the shovel same thing if you are digging, you want to get down into it pushing with your bigger arm muscles and with your shoulder rather than just with your wrist.
Dave Epstein: Now anything with pulling with just using the hands?
Ian Manning: If you just use your pincer grip here it is not a very strong grip. So it is going to fatigue very fast. We use what we call a ‘key grip’ and you want to get in and around that weed and pull it because this grip will be stronger than just doing this.
Dave Epstein: If you want to get this area little bit stronger you have a kind of a neat little tip, I just go down in my basement.
Ian Manning: Simple just grab a hammer, it is the weight that most people will have on their house and what you do is you just grab the handle like you would do some hammering and just simple thing is you want turn it over back and forth. And what this does is now it just not strengthen your grip because you have a hold on to the hammer. But you are using your wrist muscles to turn that hammer back and forth. So, simple back and forth like that and also just go into this simple hammering exercise up and down but slower more like a repetition like you are working out.
