Alright folks, a lot of people have asked for more tutorials on how to mix soul RnB and hip-hop. Now, the highest music has what’s known as a steady 4/4 beat. In other words, when you listen to it, you can have bang, bang, bang, bang, so you will count accordingly, 1, 2, 3,4 like so.
With RnB, soul, hip-hop, you haven’t got that, you’ve got this sound and these beats. To some people all over the place, and they say, how will we have to count it? Because it’s like this, you don’t count it like this 1, 2, and 3456789. You don’t do that all. How you count is this, or first of all, what I want you to imagine, what I want you to listen to is the hand clap, the high note. The snare sign which is this. Now, if you listen to that snare sign, you’ll find the gaps are identical.
Now, inside those gaps, I want you to count exactly in the middle, so it is like that. So, this too difficult. Now in there, there’s actually another beat. Now, you don’t just count 1, 2, 3. You count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So, now, 0123 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. In other words, you count the hand claps but you also count exactly in the middle of the hand claps.
Forget it if the beats go like this. Try and ignore the beat, try get out that in your mind. Just count the hand claps, in between those handclaps count the beat. Now what I’m going to do, I’m going to mix couple of tracks together, this Kelly Roman, Ain’t Nobody I think it is, kind of track called this, oh my God, oh my God, right.
Now, what I’m going to do as well very quickly, with the likes of this kind of music, quite often you’ll have a track 12 in single and it last for say 7, 8, 9 minutes. Say, it have a long introduction, the middle you have, it’s all broken up into vocals, into instrumental break, etc, and then at the end, caught up in this long. So you’ve got a good opportunity to mix the next track in, really anywhere with these.
With soul RnB and hip-hop, it’s a lot more intricate, there’s very little caught of in this very little instrumental break, there’s very little beginning and end. So of course you have to be more constructive where a bunch you bring your next track in.
Now, what I’m going to do to mix this first one, it will be in beat, hopefully, we’ll be in time, but I’m not going to choose a correct time to bring the next track in. So, we could have vocals over vocals. Then the next time I mixed it, hopefully, I’ll actually choose the correct time. Now again, this is about structuring this kind of mix. Now, to do a house mix of saying an hour, or two hours, it’s really easy because if you want to be, you do it simply, all you going to do is play one, bring the next one at the end and then playing out through. Bring the next at the end as this was soul RnB and hip-hop. You’ve got to be a little bit more constructive. You got to chose the right time to bring the next track in with a little bit more work, not a little bit more easy, you’ve got to just chose and just be that little bit more cautious, right. So, here we go.
