One of the question I am always getting ask is do I need a manager. A manger is someone who attains to obtain your agency representation and from to time and actual booking. When I started modeling I initially signs with manager in California. He was targeting the overseas market for me which I know nothing about. I always thought he must have most amazing contacts theres and if that as not for him I can never even dream of getting an agency there. After my first contract in Tokyo, Japan I watch the more experienced models and saw how they would in there way represents themselves by contracting agency on their own. So I want to model in Singapore I emailed the well known agency they are photo and in five minute they email me back a contract. I was modeling in Singapore two weeks later. But doing this I save the five percent I was paying a manager. Now five percent is does not seems like a lot. But this is five percent of your gross salary.
Let me brake this down for you. A minimum contract in a Japanese market pay a 16000 U.S. gross. For two months. Then you have to take away the 20% percent for agency pay, your plane ticket can pass the cards, Subway pass, models apartment, food and so on.
Usually the only left with a few thousand dollars but then you have to pay your manager 5% of $16,000.00. That is $800.00 from you possible one $3000.00 that works out to be 30%. Now from time to time a manager can not knock the door that you could not souly by using their connection in the industry. At this time a manager can be helpful. But if you decided to take this route I recommend you exhaust all of there atmospheres. This can save you a great deal time and money in a long run. On the other hand, if you are in the service agency they can also serve as your mother agent which is many ways is a same as a manager. Mother agent is primary agency; however, they can also find your contract either overseas or in various cities at you best. Your mother agency is paid a partial commission by the agency and they secure for you. Pease note however, that when dealing with any agency or manager you must do your homework and investigate then very carefully. It is always important to verify their reputation of any agency or manager before doing business with them.
