Ken Dolan: One of the questions we always get at the Holidays, “Hey Dolan’s, how much should we tip to the people who are so nice to us during the course of the year? Well, let me start off by saying, any numbers we give you if you leave in New York, LA or Chicago, double them okay. But it’s customary year end to reward people for stuff that they’ve done for and especially in New York City, you better reward them because it won’t happen again.
Daria Dolan: And so you see there lies the problem because you know if you had somebody that you had a bad run in, it does something kind of necessary for you, you may not feel so inclined just to give them anything because you want to sort of to get back at them. Don’t do that. I can literally recall in the apartment building, we lived in New York City.
Ken Dolan: What happened?
Daria Dolan: I could watch the guys with the vacuum on the days. They were vacuuming the hall and tell you exactly which apartment didn’t tip or didn’t tip enough.
Ken Dolan: Get out of here.
Daria Dolan: Because somehow well rather the vacuum never made it to their front door.
Ken Dolan: I know, if she did tell, well if anybody, how long you’ve been known a person, how long you’d be used his service, is that depends on you.
Daria Dolan: How important is their service to you?
Ken Dolan: Another one too Daria that I don’t think an awful lot of people think off and I’ve got to do that as we think of our tipping to all the people that have been so nice to us during the year also, is tipping part of what you do during the year anyway.
Daria Dolan: Exactly.
Ken Dolan: And also, I think but I think that aside. I think the number one, through at least among the consideration is, do they really make the extra effort for you consistently during the year.
Daria Dolan: Exactly.
Ken Dolan: And I’m sure there are people in and everybody watching us no matter where be, maybe on dolans.com looking at this video, you have to tip somebody, somebody. Give me some guidelines.
Daria Dolan: Alright. Well, let’s talk a hair dresser which I’m intimately familiar with.
Ken Dolan: Oh, yes. Thousands of dollars. Why not?
Daria Dolan: Basically, if you tip them the cost of what one of your normal hair dresser appointment is.
Ken Dolan: Like a double at the Holiday pay twice.
Daria Dolan: Yes, exactly. So, many don’t want to do the perming, coloring of the day that you’re going to do the tip.
Ken Dolan: You’re so, oh boy. That’s sneaky. Door man that you're living in an apartment building, in most major cities certainly you’re on anyway between $25.00 and $35.00 makes sense. Baby sitting.
Daria Dolan: What?! Oh yeah, I forgot we lived in New York City. Sorry.
Ken Dolan: What?
Daria Dolan: Just ignore me.
Ken Dolan: What? I said double or triple even the —
Daria Dolan: Yeah I got it, okay.
Ken Dolan: What shopping bags?! I didn’t know you are shopping. We got so many stories about the effects of tipping and not tipping.
Daria Dolan: How about nanny? They really—
Ken Dolan: Full time or full time.
Daria Dolan: Full time nanny that should be paid one week salary extra.
Ken Dolan: Okay, baby sitter, would be about $25.00 or $30.00 that’s equivalent of again, paying double for whatever you might pay for a baby sitting for one night. Remember I used to baby sit for $1.25.
Daria Dolan: I think now, you’re paying $25.00 a night.
Ken Dolan: So it’s the equivalent of two nights. The newspaper is awfully is important to use because we get papers delivered everyday. I say between $25.00 and $50.00 again depending on how many papers, how good they are? Is delivered in bad weather?
Daria Dolan: Oh yeah, we did. Yeah, we get multiples.
Ken Dolan: Multiple what?
Daria Dolan: Multiple newspapers.
Ken Dolan: Oh no, we get five or six a day and they are incredibly dependable.
Daria Dolan: Exactly.
Ken Dolan: So they should get the high end of all.
Daria Dolan: Now with your mail deliverer.
Ken Dolan: Federal law.
Daria Dolan: Federal law says, you may not give them gifts of money and envelopes which you are going to conveniently put in the mailbox—
Ken Dolan: No.
Daria Dolan: Without a stamp. They are not supposed to accept that. I’ve never known a postal delivery that we’ve known to every turn it found but.
Ken Dolan: Daria, this is video that is going to be around forever. Don’t be saying that.
Daria Dolan: I’m just being honest. I’m being honest but if you want to follow the strict federal laws regarding your postal carrier, then $20.00 or less in the form of some sort of a gift, maybe it’s Starbucks coupons or whatever.
Ken Dolan: Oh no, not cash.
Daria Dolan: Not cash.
Ken Dolan: And the last but not the least, if you get your garbage picked or somebody else with trash or something certainly $25.00 would be perfectly reasonable. For people that are really, really give the extra, if it really important to you during the course of the year, be reasonably generous.
Obviously, that doesn’t mean that they’re not going to help you and then they could be nice but I’m going to tell you at the holidays a few extra dollars obviously, very, very welcome for anybody who’s good to you. If you want them to continue to be good to you, you get the message.
Daria Dolan: Say happy holidays with some grin.
