How to Muddle Mint for a Cocktail

So in this segment, we’re going to talk about muddling mint. Now I see all the time bartenders putting mint in the glass, grab their muddler and just going into it. This is not what you want to do with mint or really any herb. If you take a look at mint, even big batch of mints, you're going to notice it has the stalk, the leaves, and all these little veins in the leaves themselves. These hold chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is bitter. Do not want to break into that. The first thing you need to do is pull off the leaves. Now if you're going to muddle the mint, place it into your glass, grab your muddler and just lightly press down. You just want it to release the oils. That’s if you want to muddle the mint though. I don’t want to muddle the mint. I think it’s completely unnecessary. I'm trying to wake this mint up. I want to get the oils out and I want to do it my way. So I'm going to smack it.
Take a handful of mint. Wake it up. Throw it in. now if you were here, come closer. You could smell that. You can smell the mint all over my hands. That’s all it took. You don’t need to muddle it. Just grab some mint leaves, again, smack it. Smell it everywhere. Put it in your glass. Start building your mint you up and the way you go. That’s how you muddle mint.
