Male 1: All right this is part of this navigation with compass and GPS series. The first two were basic introductory it’s like get your GPS, get your compass, walk around in the neighborhood and one of the videos I’ll say there’s going to be plenty of time to get lost later.
Well, today is the day. What we’re doing is we’re packing the GPS to find the weight point which is our camp here or drive a four and half miles or to hill. We’re taking the GPS, the compass along with the topographical map which is not with seal, and we’re going to be navigating our way back home. It’s an overnight hiking trip.
Even though it’s four and a half miles, it can be about six miles all for all elevation going over hills around hills and stuff and anyway. Len and I we’ve got our GPS, we’ve got the way point we saved it. I’ll already set our GPS is to go back to here to see how the 1:00 point is. My GPS says we’re 20 feet away.
Male 2: 19.
Male 1: 19 so the point of the two of us we’ll get back home. All right, let’s go.
Male 2: One.
Male 1: Okay, we’ve been on the road. We are now 4.46 miles from the camp. We’re going to first get out of this sun, I’ll leave the truck here we’ll hike down the trail. Pass over some shed we’re going to break on our map. Get our barrels and everything and then start on the hike.
All right, we stopped before our rest break we’ve been hiking for about 20 – 25 minutes now. I’m kind of tired, get our gears set on the ground and Len set his head on ground and look what’s on it. Is it moving? Spider right there.
All right, not only one but two. His head has been on the ground for about three minutes and then if you look down inside there there’s a third one. Right inside there, so whenever you throw your head on the ground you need to be really careful before you put it back on, before you put in your gear back on you need to check it for a little pest like that.
We stopped for our rest break. Keep your map inside of some tap of water proof enclose your water tight enclosure. Pour your map out unfold it. By the time you spot a ground that pretty level okay, set your compass. Okay, now set your compass back to zero degrees put on your pointer land. I’m going to take that and land your map up with true to north, and magnet north okay?
Now, this time it’s going to be exact because this ground is not perfectly level, but it’s going to get us close all right. All right, we have land our map up with magnetic north. We use our compass well note the thing is it your GPS needs to be set at UTM not latitude or longitude. This topographical maps are more accurate using UTM okay? Don’t use latitude or longitude.
All right, so the map is upside down. All right, here we go. It’s not pointed by torch magnetic north. We’re going to find our location using the UTM okay? I don’t want to give everybody on internet my location. I won’t let them know exactly where I am all right.
So, I will look on the map according to GPS and I am —the first numbers are 3441 okay? And the second numbers are 004414 so I’m right about here.
Now, I need to go here. My GPS says that I need to travel 268 degrees to get back home. I’ll take that, put my compass set this on 268 degrees at my pointer of 268 degrees land on magnetic up back the red pointer the north pointer back up with north and it’s pointing notice the side of my compass right here. It’s pointing back to where I want to go here. So, I know that my GPS is pointing me in the right location to here.
All right, we’re going to take us a few minutes to get some, drink some water and get rehydrated. The temperature today is going to be in the upper 80s, heat index in the mid 90s. So, we’ll going to take a few minutes purify some water at the creek and we’re going to get back on the trip.
All right, we’re two hours almost three hours into our hike.
Male 3: We’ve got a four hour trip.
Male 1: Yeah, four and a half miles. Anyway, we started at about 4.4 miles 4.3 miles we still got two and a half miles to go. So, we stopped for a few minutes we broke out our map now we’ll go with this one more time. Take your compass set the point here to zero all right. Take a land and edge up on the edge of the map and orientates your map North okay? Make sure your map the top of it is really toward the North because it’s easy get the map turn around up side turn it at the side.
Now, the GPS says that we need a bearing of 265 degrees. Now, we figure as you won’t take the compass I’m going to turn it to 265 degrees and about there, okay? So, take your pointer your North pointer and land it up with North on your dial and that arrow right there is the direction we need to go.
All right, now let’s take a look at the map. Now, hang on just a minute let me get my —okay, it says here GPS on UTM because it’s a lot easier to do all right, now we are somewhere in this area. And according to the compass we’re right in here somewhere this is where we ant to go, that edge of the compass points from our location where we ant to go, so that we know that the GPS is pretty close with the map.
All right, also all right, that’s it. Let’s go back in the trail.
