Aisha: Hi! I’m Aisha Alves with Picture Perfect Make-up and I am going to show you how to organize your make-bag. Today, we are here with our model Theresa and she’s brought all of her make-up with her. So, we are going to see what she’s got and see if we can organize things for her little bag. Now, Theresa tell me about your everyday is.
Theresa: Well, I am at very, very long days because I am a fulltime university student as well as I’m working as well.
Aisha: Okay, so sounds like your pretty busy that I would assume that you don’t really have a lot of downtime during the day or time to touch up.
Theresa: No, I don’t.
Aisha: Okay, so you really probably don’t need to carry all of this with you. So, what we are going to do is simplify her make-up routine and kind of lighten the load. Because I’m sure she’s got a lot of books and stuffs to carry so, we’re going to kind of simplify things and really keep it down to the basics. So, let’s see what she’s got. Wow! Now a lot of my clients have the same type of problem in that they’re logging around these huge make-up bags and they’ve got lots of stuff that they don’t even know what is this anymore.
So, what I suggest when you want to organize your make-up is to take your make-up collection and spread it out. And then you want to sort things out and really be kind of particular about what you want to keep and what you don’t want to keep. So, the first things you do is look at your make-up and divide it into three piles. You are going to make one pile of items that you know you are going to use a lot. And then you are going to make another pile of things that you’ve got and they look nice but you really don’t use them. And then lastly, we are going to do a pile of things that you’re going to throw away. And this is something that I definitely want to talk about for a minute because a lot of my clients is asked me, when is it that I should throw away my make up?
So, a good rule of thumb is this. Mascara because it is a liquid and it something that’s close to your eye is something that you’re probably want to throw away every three to four months. Also when you pull out the one you can see if it looks really dry and clumpy it’s probably a good idea to replace it. For anything that’s creamy or liquid like a foundation or a lip gloss or a concealer usually the rule of thumb is to throw it away after a year because anything after a year will open up the possibility of harboring bacteria or the make-up itself going bad because it is a liquid. One thing that you want to do is just open up your product and smells it, usually if your product has to have a round said or moldy smell it’s definitely time to throw it away. Its smells pretty good so we can hang on to in.
And you want to keep going with all of your products; this is something that you use a lot?
Theresa: It is.
Aisha: Okay, that’s going to go into your first pile. So, we’re going to keep going here and one by one look at all the items and evaluate if you’re going to use it, if you’re not going to use it and if you’re going to toss it. Now, what we’ve done is we’ve separated all of Theresa’s make-up into three basic categories. Items that she likes to use and that she uses a lot. Items that she has in there and pretty good shape but she really doesn’t use them and then finally item that are ready to be thrown away. We still have couple of more things to sort out and I wanted to definitely look at this because one I noticed entries this bag she had five different lip products. She’s got three glasses and two lipsticks; do you wear all of this?
Theresa: No.
Aisha: Okay, what you want to do is really simplify and maybe take it down to just one lipstick and one glass that you know you’re going to use all the time. If you have a bunch of different colors look at them and really decide what is the color that you’re going to use more. Also, she’s got two eyelash colors and that’s probably something you are going to need. Which one do you like more?
Theresa: This one.
Aisha: Okay, this is our good one so we are going to put that in the key pile, this one is in really good shape it looks it must brand new so we are going to put it right there. Again, two mascaras would this one looks like a gift with purchase it’s pretty old, it’s looks kind of clumpy so that one is time to toss. We are going to put the good one into her key pile and finally she’s got two twisters. Now, twisters are in general a good thing to keeping your make-up bag because you never and no one something is going to pop up that you’re going to need to twist. So, why don’t we keep the mini one because that one’s is going to be a little bit portable and of course the other one you can keep for storage or keep for later.
Now, that we’ve got your three piles, one thing that I wanted to point out was that when you’ve got the make-up that you don’t normally use but it is very good shape really think about if you’re going to use it. If you’re not going to use it, a really good idea is to donate it to women shelter. Right now there are a lot of women shelters that do accept unused or lightly used make-up for a good cost. And that’s how you sort out your make-up collection. Now, I am going to show you how to create an easy to use and portable make-up bag.
