To help you get a better idea on what you need for storage space, you will have to clean your closet, discard or donate items that you don't need anymore and consider moving items like seasonal clothing to a different closet or even storing them sealed plastic bins.
Take an inventory of what's left in your closet, now it's important you count all items such ties, belts, shoes, and even luggage. Think about your current needs, and any changes that might happen in the future. Will the room always be a bedroom or is it possible your child room could someday be a shared space or maybe turn into a home office? Now it's time to a pay a visit to Lowe's to see your choices for closet organizers.
Our associates can help you determine which kind of shelfing works best for you. And you can see your choices of hanging racks, hamper bins, shelves, and other accessories. Closet organizers can be purchased by the linear foot for custom systems or can be bought in prepackaged kits. The kits typically include everything you need to do 5-8 foot wide wall. Both systems have additional options available including specialized drawers, baskets, shoe racks, and tie and belt racks. Our printable instructions contain a checklist of the components you will need to get started.
When it comes to types of systems, you have a choice of wire versus laminate. Wire products usually are less expensive and they can be easily customized with accessories and add-ons. Wire shelfing is easy to install and could be cut to your closet measurements. You will want a wire shelfing system that has continuous sliding rods which allows our hangers to move interrupted across the entire bar. Now let's talk about laminate systems. Laminate will give you sturdy shelfing and a great finished look. It gives the appearance of a custom designed closet for the cost of an off the shelf system.
Once you have decided which type of system you will use, it's time to create you design. Online tools are available to help you plan your space or you can do it yourself with some graph paper and a pencil. Take measurements and rough out the bird's eye view dimensions. Map out the height, width, and depth dimensions of the closet. Now since most walls aren't perfectly square, you want to measure the width of each wall at three different heights and then use the smallest measurements. Also make note of any windows and where the door is located, also which way it opens. Now we have a pocket door so we don't have to worry about that.
Using your inventory of closet items determine how much space you want for things such as ties, belts and folding garments. Lay the items out on the floor and stack them the way you like them in your closet. Then measure the space you have used.
Now there are some things to keep in mind when designing your closet organizer. Double hanging rods and adjustable hanging systems provide more closet space. If your wardrobe consists mostly of skirts, shirts, slacks, and blouses you can double your hanging space. Typically, one rod is placed around 80 inches high and another below it around 40 inches. If you have a lot of longer items like dresses or coats, you will want more single hanging rods which will be placed around 70 inches high.
For a child's closet the bottom rod should be placed low. The upper rod which will probably be out of the child's reach can be used to store out of season clothes. Some systems are adjustable vertically and horizontally so they can be adjusted as a child grows or as your storage needs change, use drawers to store socks, belts, purses and other items that don't hang or sit well on shelves.
Drawer frames are available in different heights, just be sure to allow for adequate clearance for the drawers to open especially in closets with sliding doors. Make a rough sketch of your space on graph paper. After making any necessary adjustments you should be able to determine the length of the shelves for you system. Add up all the pieces to get your total amount of materials.
When you purchase your system you will need to know the type of wall in your closet, such as dry wall paneling or concrete. Now this is important because special hardware might be required for ankling your shelving to the walls. And that's all there is to it. So now that you have your design, you are ready to install.
For our installation videos, we design a wire storage system for a child's bedroom and a laminate storage system for a couple. Check them out, along with the printable instructions at lowes.com/videos.
