Rebecca Ringham: Anorexia nervosa is a very serious disease and we do know that people die from having anorexia nervosa. Indeed up to 10% of females with anorexia nervosa will die so it’s much more serious than people think. The good news is that over 50% of people do recover from anorexia nervosa.
Cory’s story highlights a number of issues related to the struggles of anorexia nervosa. People with the anorexia nervosa refused to eat enough to maintain what we considered to be a healthy body weight. Despite them being very thin, starving in fact, they are in denial about the seriousness of their illness and they still see themselves as too big or too fat and they are terrified of gaining weight. They may go to extremes to maintain or to lose more weight. Things like fasting, starving, binging and purging, using laxatives and diet pills, and diuretics, and they base all of their self-esteem in how they look.
The treatment of anorexia nervosa is complex but the bottom line is the person must be re-fed and food is medicine. This may require hospitalization. The re-feeding process can be medically challenging. From then, it looks like there are some therapies that are helpful in the treatment of anorexia nervosa particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy and there may be some medications that are helpful. We also know that in children or in adolescents and children that family therapy is a frontline defense against anorexia nervosa and the family is vitally important to eradicating and helping the child with dealing with the anorexia nervosa.
Probably, no websites today, have any educational value and they promote a very deadly disease in my opinion and should be banned from computers and from households. I think it’s very important for parents to be aware and to be on the lookout for their teenagers looking at this type of material on the internet and if you find that your teenager has access to this and needs type of pro-ano website or any kind of website promoting an eating disorder, it’s imperative to sit down and have a very frank discussion about what he or she may have learned and what they were looking for and stick them up with the plan to remove it from the household and limit access to pro-ano websites.
