This is a Mavic Crossmax; the first thing you have to do is get the end cap off. It's just an oil ring that holds it in, there, that's the system that holds it in. There is a little groove inside with that oil ring in, and everything is dry. Then you put a 10 millimeter hex key in this side, 5 millimeter hex key goes in that side. You unscrew this end cap. There. End cap here, you take that off. You can see there has been some dirt that's gotten into here. Turn this bearing and it's very nice and smooth.
A lot of times what happens is the wheel will start squealing when the bearing has failed, like wheel bearings on the cars, similar system of that cartridge bearing. That's when you need new bearing and you need to know the ID, the OD, and the thickness, and then it will go right in.
If the old bearing is shot, you don't need to worry too much, when you are driving it out, about wrecking it, and you can drive it out with any number of things that will bud up against the end of the bearing, but once you get one out, then of course it's easier to get the other one. You can even use this, then tap this from the backside to get the other one out.
Then pressing them in, a good idea is to use the old bearing to press in the new ones, if it doesn't just push in by itself. This outer section is a easy fit so that you don't jam the old bearing in there, and you just stack up a new bearing over the old one and tap it in with the soft hammer and get it in there flush, once you have got the old one out, and then there is no harm in putting a little bit of lube on here. You can see, there has been wear from the bearing on this aluminum surface here. So you slide that through. You have this end cap. I am just going to put a little bit of lube in there, wipe away the excess lube, don't get any on my rotor, and now just screw in 10 millimeter on the one side of the axle, 5 millimeter on this end cap. Snug it up. Drop this in.
Once the axle is fixed into the bike, tighten the skewer down, you can actually check and see if there is side, side play in the bearing or if it's binding at all. You can adjust it by putting this Mavic tool and these pins, and you can see that's threaded, and you unscrew this. If I tighten this tightly enough I can maybe turn that. Yeah, there you can see one screwing and three screwing. You can back this out or tightened it down to either remove play by tightening it down, or loosen up binding by backing it out. So that's a Mavic hub.
