My kids like to pack their lunch for school and I am always looking for a way to pack healthy nutritious lunch. But, I am also looking for a way to pack 100% waste free lunches and it's a lot easier than you think, let me show you how.
To get started we found a lunch box made of recycled content. This is actually made of recycled water bottles and you can find it at reusablebags.com. We have completely done away with all those non recyclable plastic baggies.
So we're using reusable containers that have been stockpiling in the pantry, and for our sandwich we found this great Wrap-N-Mat, it doubles as a place mat. It will hold any size sandwich fresh, until they are ready to eat.
I pack a reusable insulated water bottle and a reusable utensil and a cloth napkin. Now don't worry about these things being thrown away because there is no trash in this lunch, all of it's going to come back home.
Think about it this way. Every student in this country generates about 67 pounds of trash every year. That number alone should want to make you change your habit, and doing your part doesn't stop there.
When you buy goodies for lunch, it's smart to buy in bowls to cut back on all that packaging waste. Items like chips are available in large quantities and you can put those in smaller individual containers.
If you want to go further, shop organically for locally grown fruits and veggies to add to your lunch, it's healthier for your kids and they will be supporting your local economy.
Just introducing a few of these changes into your daily school year routine, will drastically reduce your family's eco-footprint, and you will save money in the long run.
