Jennifer Bertrand: A Cannon paint is what makes these fabulous cabinets look like they came from a high end store, but they didn't. I started off with the David kitchen and if you have got one, give it a face lift on a budget and over the weekend. I'll show you how.
Kitchens get a lot of wear and tear, so make sure you degrease your cabinets before you start painting. I'm using TSP, which stands for Tri Sodium Phosphate; it's a chemical degreaser, you can find at any Home Improvement Stores. Don't forget, safety first, make sure you're wearing gloves when you're using chemicals.
The next step is to start priming. I'm using an oil based primer. This really helps the paint stick to the cabinet. If you have a high gloss finish on your cabinets, go ahead and lightly stain them before you start priming. These are lotions so the oil based primer will work just fine.
These cabinets are now dry, and now I'm going to apply the color. I'm personally hand painting it on, because I'm going for a more natural organic look. But you've options of either rolling it on, using a sprayer for whatever finish you desire.
Deciding how you apply the paint really depends on your budget, and how much time you have to complete the project. In kitchens, I usually suggest a semi gloss finish on your cabinets, because it's durable and it will last the tested time.
Not everyone has flat panel doors like these. Some of you may have ones with architectural feature. I'm going to show you, how to do a distress paint effect, in case you're not into a solid finish. The first thing you're going to do is take a brown paint and that's going to represent your wood color. Your brush is almost dry, you're going to take your brush and slightly touch all of the edges of your door panel.
Now, it's time to edge the door. So, I have a glaze that I have already mixed up, it's just three or four parts glaze to one part brown paint, all you're going to do, is take your glaze, paint it over the whole door and wipe it off.
The best thing about antiquing your door is that you can't mess it up, so the more layers the better. You don't like one coat, let it dry completely, and then keep adding coats. Now it's time to put the hardware on, and put this kitchen back together.
Painting off your existing kitchen cabinets is not only cost efficient, but it's also eco-friendly. For just about under $100, you can turn your kitchen as your favorite room in your house.
