Jennifer Bertrand: This beautiful hand painted backsplash creates a fresh focal paint in this kitchen. It's an easy project you can do in the day and for under a hundred bucks. You'll need the three Ps. Primer, Paint and Polyurethane.
Glossy surface primer is the key to starting this project. It's made to stick to ceramic tile, regular primer just won't do. I am applying it with a foam roller, it's going give it a smooth finish and prevent drips. And no drips, means you get a nice professional look.
Because you use a special primer on the tiles, you could just use a regular wall paint. For this kitchen I wanted a fresh look, but I still wanted to keep it light and airy. So, I painted the tile the same color as the cabinets. But you have lot of options. You could antique your tiles, if you want an antiquated look, or you could do something metallic and silvery, and contemporary. And the best part is, if you hate it or you get bored with it, you can always paint over it. Now, it's time to jazz things up and add a bit of character with a hand painted design.
This color is going to serve as a background color for my design, and this particular instance, I'm keeping it very tonal and soft in the same color family, but keep in mind the theme of your kitchen, and how you're to use color on your backsplash. You're going to want it to dry about an hour before you start painting your pattern.
Now it's time to start painting the design. I'm going to replicate an existing pattern that's in this mural behind me. If you're not into free handing, you can use a stencil, that will make it a lot easier.
Try a little variation; I'm just going to outline these leaves. Sometimes it's fun to change things up a little. In order to protect your masterpiece, don't forget to put on the coat of polyurethane, it will protect it from the normal wear and tear of the kitchen.
You can use this technique in bathrooms, and on fireplace around too. So when you see tiles, think of the three Ps, it gives your space a new look in less than a day, and under a hundred bucks.
