This is a 45-foot mural, I am making it with easier than you think. Take it from me making murals is an exciting way to decorate any room. All you need is an overhead projector, a pencil and some paint.
I am at a rec center today and this place is used by a lot of kids. So I want my mural to inspire them and get them something fun to look at. Anything with a pattern could be a source of inspiration for your design, a scarf, a glove, a wallet, you name it.
I will show you how easy it can be, I am going to use a transparency. If you feel comfortable you could do this free-hand, but just be sure that you make your lines dark enough so they show up. If you want to use a photo, you can take it to a copy center and have them put it on a transparency for you, it will only cost a few bucks.
Start by placing the transparency on the glass, turning on the projector and then turn off your lights, you could rent a projector like I am using for around $50 a day. Move the projector closer or farther from the wall until the design is exactly where you want it.
Here is a great tip, you can mark a position of the projector with masking tape, that way if you have to move it or come back to it you'll always know where you started.
Using a pencil trace the pattern on the wall. I am going for a contemporary graphic look. Now I am using latex paint and in the larger area I am just rolling it out with a roller.
I am just using shades of blue and gray on this mural to keep it simple. If you are not sure what color palette to choose, you could refer to your original image or you could just make up a palette of your own.
If you are working on a detailed area, use an artist brush. See it's easier than you thought and it only takes a few hours to dry.
Depending on the size of your room and the detail of your design a mural is an inexpensive weekend project that can add a wow factor to any room. Go ahead and try it!
