Host: So, maybe you can tell us a bit more about what the Pocket Mask is?
Female Speaker: Sure! So basically what it is, it's one of your best ways of preventing disease from you transmitting to the victim and from the victim transmitting to you. So, it's actually a really neat thing and it covers the mouth and nose and there's also a removable one-way valve that's comes with it and what this does is, it prevents any fluids such as vomits, spits, so on and so forth from entering into your mouth. So, it's a great device to have.
Host: So, it seems obvious to say that conducting CPR on a baby, for instance, is somewhat different right?
Female Speaker: Slightly yeah, because they have such smaller bodies, we have to adjust ourselves. So, if we had a baby here who wasn't moving, we need to follow the same first primary steps as you would for an adult. So you will check your scene and make sure everything is okay, and if it was then you would approach.
What I mean I do is, if I saw the baby fall unconscious, I will take the baby and go myself to go and call 911 with them. But if I do and see what happened, what I am going to do is I'm going to perform CPR if necessary for two minutes first and then go and call.
Here I have my pocket mask and I'm going to use it a little bit differently on an infant. Okay, so what we're going to do is we are actually going to turn it upside down and have the pointy part on the chin, rather than the adult and the child, we'll have it this way. Okay and we're actually going to cover the whole face with it
Alright, so I'm going give him two breaths, just very small and it's just a puff of air, very small ones. So, you just have to blow just a little bit and we'll continue with 30 compressions; one, two, three, four, five -- 29, 30
Now, let's say, you didn't have a pocket mask. What you would do is you'll put your mouth on completely over the baby's nose and mouth and you'll breathe that way and then continue 30 compressions. So, you'll continue doing 30 compressions in two breathes until there's a change in the situation such as either baby vomited or baby woke up or the ambulance came and was there to help you out and that's pretty much it.
