Efficient, Effective Coaching Methods and Strategies
Hello, welcome to Football Done Right an interactive coaching website done for coaches
by coaches. My name is Coach Matt Stern and today we’re going to be going over Get
off Progression. In today’s lesson we’re going to be going through Run and Pass Get off
Progressions. Player one is going to line up on the Get off Board, a rubber board used to
represent the line of scrimmage. He’s going to start of in a balance stance and display the
proper technique used for run get off. This technique is used in run situations. Player one
is going to fire out getting a second step in the ground before the line of scrimmage.
Firing out with his hands up to stop the offensive player’s momentum and reestablish the
line of scrimmage.
Player one ready, set, go! [Player one demonstrating] Now sprint through. Excellent! So
player fired out hands up stopping the offensive player’s momentum, getting a second
step in the ground before the line of scrimmage so it can redirect to the football, player
one is going to reset, he’s going to show a pass get off. Pass get offs are a little different.
In pass get off we don’t want to get our second step in the ground before the line of
scrimmage because we don’t have to redirect. We want to get up the field so player one is
going to emphasize his first step up the field and what he is going to try and do is get to
the offensive player’s hip.
This comb and board represent the line of scrimmage. The bag represents what I call the
tackle set point. The offensive tackle usually takes three kick steps one, two, three and
sets up to block with our initial get off with our first step we want to get our inside foot
up the field getting our hip to his hip. So that we decrease our blocking surface area and
give them as little as possible to block. So player one is going to get off and its pass get
off techniques stepping up the field getting to the offensive player’s hip in his first step.
Player one ready, set, go!
[Player one demonstrating]
Stepping up the field hipping and ripping through the quarterback, next in the series of
progression, player one is going to do a run get off and run redirect to the football. Again
we want to get our second step in the ground before the line of scrimmage so we can
redirection of the football. Player one is going to be in a staggered stance. He’s going to
get his run get off getting a second step in the ground attacking with his hands firing out
into the offensive alignment. He’s going to recognize where the ball is going. He’s going
to shuffle step and sprint to where the ball carrier is.
I’ll stand here and be a position of the area of direct and I will direct the player where to
go. Player one ready, balance stance, he’s going to have his run get off, set, go! Good!
[Player one demonstrating]
The next series of drills we’re going to a pass recognition. We’ll be going through three
drills player one is going to be coming out in his pass technique up the field to get a long
step up the field and he’s going to redirect the pass to screen and to draw. Out of pass I
will show the pass sign. Player one will take his long step trying to get to the offensive
players hip. If he sees pass he wants to get up field to the corner. If player one sees screen
pass, screen he’s going to break his feet down and sprint to the screen.
The third one is going to be a draw recognition. Player one will see pass, draw signal,
player one will retrace his steps and go right back to where he came from hoping to
tackle the draw from behind. Player one ready coming out of his pass get off technique,
set, go!
[Player one demonstration]
Pass keep in rhythm finish through the quarterback. Player one is going to reset and give
him another signal. Player one in a staggered stance, his going to come out pass get off
set, go. Pass, screen! Good! Sprint through the cone. Player one is going to reset. He’s
going to come out of his pass stance. Pass get off set, go! Pass, draw, retrace and back to
where he came from.
This get off progression drill is done on both sides. You usually run it with two different
lines. Player set up on both sides so the can go both right and left handed stances going in
both directions. This drill is used primarily for footwork and technique in a run get off
and a pass get off. For more information on this drill and more for more drills like this
