Football Done Right
Efficient, Effective Coaching Methods and Strategies
Hi Welcome to Football Done Right an interactive coaching website done for coaches by
coaches. My name is Coach Matt Stern and in today’s lesson we’re going to be talking
about the broad jump. Broad jump is a drill used to measure athletic ability at all levels.
We’re going to have player positions on the line in upright posture. He’s going to start
with his feet at shoulder width apart. He’s going to have bended he’s knees, flex with the
hip. He’s going to use his arms to create momentum driving himself forward exploding,
extending his hips and settling back in an athletic position.
We’ll go through this drill ones and then will show you a three broad jump progression.
Player one ready! He’s going to settle in a position knees bent, hips bent. He’s going to
use his arm to create momentum driving his arms forward exploding out of his hips
jumping as far as he can. On your ready, [player one demonstrating] player one uses
arms to create momentum, threw his arms forward, exploded out of his hips and settle
back to his athletic position.
Player two ready! On y our go, [player two demonstrating] good, good. Player two used
his arms to create momentum, bended his knees, exploded out of his hips, jumped and
settled back to his athletic progression.
Now we’re going to a three broad jump progression. Player one will explode, jump settle;
explode jump settle again; and explode, jump, settle again. At his last settlement that will
be the length measured from the start point to the end of his third jump. On your ready,
[player one demonstrating] there’s jump one, jump two, and jump three. Now we
measure from the start point on the line to his last settlement which is roughly 9 yards in
length.
