Will Hamilton: The fifth part of your serve is the racquet drop. When you get to the trophy pose, your preparations done and from here you are ready to swing forward. The racquet drop is the first part of your swing. Now in this video we're only going to focus on what the upper body does during the racquet drop. From the trophy pose your racquet drop straight behind your back and straight down at the ground, this is commonly called the scratch back position because it's very similar to train a scratch your back with your tennis racquet. Also, notice as my racquet drops down, my elbow comes up. Now as my racquet drops down behind my back, my tossing arm falls straight down and I bring it down to heel like I'm pumping my fist and these two things happened at the same time.
Also typically, when you're in your trophy pose, your tossing shoulder is going to be higher than your hitting shoulder. But you when you get to the racquet drop position you want your shoulders to be about level. You also want your upper body to be side ways to the net. In other words, you want your upper body to be facing the side fence. From the trophy pose, I dropped the racquet down behind my back, so that it's pointed at the court and as this happens my elbow comes up. From the side, when I dropped the racquet down, I also bring my tossing arm down and my shoulders level up. Now if we go back to this view, as the racquet drop behind my back and I bring my tossing arm down, my upper body rotates so I'm now side ways to the net; on other wards my upper body is facing the side fence.
This is John Isner in his trophy pose, he's got his racquet in the L position and he's got his tossing arm extended up. If we now look at him from a slightly different angle he is now dropped the racquet down behind his back. The racquets pointed straight down, his elbow has come up, his tossing arm is begun to drop, he had it extended, he is bringing it down now like he is trying to pump is fist and his shoulders have leveled out.
