Will Hamilton: In the previous video talked about recovering back to the middle court using the side shuffle and that’s why you’re going to want to recover back most of the time. But if you’re pulled wide off the court need to use a little bit different foot work it becomes more important to cover a lot a ground quickly. So, that you’re not leaving too much of the other side of the court open. And there are couple ways you can do that.
The first way that we’re going to focus on is called cross step. So, behind me I hit a wide ball so this is me shadowing a wide ball and I’m going to get myself facing the net my entire body just like I would for any other shot but then from this part I’m going to step across my right foot with my left foot and that’s the cross step right here. Let’s watch it again, so I’m facing the net and then I step across with my left foot. And that let’s me cover a little bit more ground then the side shuffle would right after I hit the ball.
There is another type of step you can take which is similar to across step but it is little bit different and I let you cover a little bit more ground it’s called the run-step. So, having got my body facing the net on this particular clip instead of stepping across with my left foot, Now what I’m going to do is pretty much pretend the run back to the middle of court, I’m going to take a run-step with my left foot, my upper body turns to face the center of the court and I take that one run step for what you’ll see here is that after I take that one run step I get my body back into the side shuffle. And with either the cross-step or the run-step that’s key what you want to do is take either one cross-step or one run-step and you need to be back in the side shuffle right before your opponent makes contact with the tennis ball.
Again like I’d said in the side shuffle video, if you’re running back to the middle of the court when your opponent hits he can very easily wrong foot use it’s hard to change direction. So, what you need to do is take that one cross step with the one run step covers much ground as you can and then get back in the side shuffle before your opponent hits the ball. So, you can move back out to the side that you’re just add move across the other side of the court move up, move back do what ever you need to do.
