Well, picking positions too is an interesting thing. I think most kids that play direct football have played at a certain position, or they may have played at a younger level and then they migrated up to the next level. They usually go to the drills or to the positions they think they have been playing. That one way it works, and the other way is the parent tells them. Your quarterback go in the quarterback line. You are not a lineman, you're a receiver. You are not a lineman, you are a running back.
Then, I think the coach has to watch practice and kind of see each drill to see what kids don't belong in that line when you are doing individual period, and then gently and kindly steer the kids at the correct line, correct position. Sometimes you get -- the kids don't want to do it, sometimes they are getting some negative feedback from the parents. But, I think coaches can have a pretty good feel for where kids belong based on the scheme they're running. I think that's probably the best way to do it.
There are a lot of other that created different ways. At the college level, at the high school level and especially if you are recruit players, you go watch and plan. You already know that this kid is a great running back, or this kid is a very good receiver, this kid is going to be a great lineman because he has already played it. He has had success at the lower levels and you have got a chance to watch, you can tape one of them or watch playing their games.
So you kind of have a pretty good idea before practicing starts about where to go. There is always an occasion where three or four kids that don't know where to go, they show up a practice, I've never played football; I don't know what to do. Then you kind of just look at their body type, see if they can run or not, put them in one of the lines and then you can make adjustments as the drills progress over the first couple of days of trial.
