How to Pick a Healthy Pillow
Dr. Travis: And we’re all starting to get a little sleepy, so we’re here on our special bedroom with sleep specialist Michael Bruce who’s helping us pick out the right pillow. So now, we do sleep better but—
Michael Bruce: It’s good for our health. And it’s actually pretty confusing.
Dr. Travis: I just asked you during break.
Michael Bruce: Right, exactly. What do I do? So the first we have to determine is what side you sleep on. Are you a back sleeper or are you a side sleeper? So even in the store, you can figure this out. Because there are certain sized pillows that are going to be better for one person and another. So you told me that you are a back sleeper.
Dr. Travis: I’m a back sleeper.
Michael Bruce: So want you is you’d stand as though your back was against the wall, but it’s like you’d be on a mattress and you’d take the pillow and you would put it behind you head. If your eyes facing directly straight forward, you chin isn’t towards you chest or your eyes aren’t up. Your eyes are parallel to the floor that means it is a good size pillow for you.
Dr. Travis: Versus being pushed forward.
Michael Bruce: Exactly, then it’s too much fill or then it’s not enough. If you are a side sleeper, then we would put it on your side and we would look for any neck strains. If you felt any strain on your neck here, as though you head were tilted or too high, then you would know that pillow actually had too much fill in it.
Dr. Travis: Then there are also these specialty pillows. They’re so many to choose from.
Michael Bruce: There are. There are a lot of different pillows and I brought three different types of pillows here today that are pretty interesting that they’re on the market now. So, we’d brought in our pillow panel over here to be able to check things out. So our first one is a visco foam pillow and this one has got some very interesting properties to it. So I want you check it out.
Dr. Drew: So it has that center cut.
Michael Bruce: Right. So there’s a cut out of the center in the middle of it.
Dr. Drew: So your head would fall right into that and it has memory foam.
Michael Bruce: Right. So what’s great about that is your head would lean back and as you would know.
Dr. Drew: So it puts you into a little bit of neck flexion which in principle should help if you’re a snorer, if you are more of a mouth snorer obviously it’s like in a cure of snoring especially if you’re nasal snore, but it may definitely help.
Michael Bruce: Right, where Dr. Sears, we’ve got something with a little bit of more neck support. So this is kind of more of high breed. So what we’ve got here is there’s a stitch across the horizon which will allow for more fill here and better support across the neck, but a lot of people don’t like that feel of memory foam all over their head so it’s a lot light and fluffy up here.
Dr. Travis: Eyes so cool. So this is for you.
Dr. Lisa: Eyes so cool.
Michael Bruce: So what’s great about this pillow is it always stays cool.
Dr. Lisa: That’s great because I’m always like flipping my pillow over.
Michael Bruce: Yes, it’s pretty amazing. So this pillow has got very specific properties to it that actually always stays cool. So you never have to look for the cool side of the pillow again. It can also be quite helpful for women who have hot flashes? Who might be experiencing those such a things in the middle of the evening as well.
So this one is call the medi comfort, this is on with a scope that helps with snoring. This one is the cervo comfort that helps with upper neck and back pain. The last one is called the eye so cool. They can all be found with the sleep better seal on them. So if you go to sleepbetter.org, you can find them.
Dr. Travis: I like this one.
Michael Bruce: You get to keep that one.
Dr. Drew: You and your nap nook.
Dr. Travis: Thank you so much.
