Thanks for checking this out. We will be talking about planning a green Christmas. At the time that I am making this video it's getting close to Christmas. I wanted to talk to you a little bit about how you can go green and save green this Christmas. So planning a green Christmas, the song tells of a white Christmas but that refers to the weather and the Christmasy atmosphere that snow can bring. But planning for a green Christmas is all about being environmentally active and aware of while saving money as well.
So in times of economic uncertainty like we are in right now, this has to be a good thing and of course if the weather brings a little bit of white covering too and that makes a green Christmas perfect. So one of the first things I was going to talk about was reusing paper to wrap gifts. Exchanging gifts is a common practice in Christmas and it can also be an excellent place to start your own green Christmas habits. But the gift wrapping papers sold in stores are usually not recyclable and most of it is going to get thrown out anyway after people open up their presents and it ends up in land fills. So this makes gift wrapping with store bought paper expensive and very very unfriendly to the climate. Not what we want to do for a green Christmas.
So a much better alternative and one that close relatives will appreciate, is to use your children's artwork to wrap gifts. You could use your children's comic books or the comic sections of a newspaper as a bright and colorful alternative, there by recycling old paper. And you can explain to the recipient of the gift in a positive way, why you are doing this and perhaps make them feel little a guilty for not having a green Christmas as well.
One thing that my brother used to do is he would take old sketches and plants that he used them, and butter paper and use that as wrapping paper and honestly it look really really cool and it's been calculated by the Sierra Club, the America's oldest and largest environmental organization that if every family in the country gift wrapped just three gifts by recycling existing paper they already have, the paper saved could be enough to cover 45,000 football fields, that's a green Christmas and a whole lot of trees saved too.
Another thing you could do is make your own wreath. If you are planning to hang a wreath on your front door, consider making one yourself. It's easy and very environmentally friendly and you will save money too. You can go on the florist or a nearby park and find evergreen branches and dry twigs and you can wrap them in a circular fashion with cranberries strung together to add a splash of bright color. You will surprise yourself at how good you are, it won't cost you anything but a little time, and the materials are all fully biodegradable. Your green Christmas can't get much better than that.
There are other things you can do like make your own cards to make it a green Christmas. So you can consider making your own cards using children's artwork again, it's perfect for this and grandparents really, really love this stuff. You can also try using LED lights on your tree, which should be a real one that can be planted out later and you will save 90% on your green Christmas electricity bill. If you start thinking about it I am sure you will come up with a ton of other great ideas for a green Christmas.
