Growing Wisdom with David Epstein
Hi, I’m David Epstein this is Growing Wisdom and I want to talk to you today about how important planning is, planning the vegetable garden.
Every year I have my garden. It’s 15x20 feet in the same spot. So, why is planning so important because where you put your crops matters. I’m marking where I believed things are going to go. So tomatoes go here, peppers go in this location then we have our cold weather crops, things like broccoli and cauliflower and some of our greens going here and I’m thinking in my head what will go there later on in the season because by the time you get to July some of the space will be reopened up again because the cold weather crops will all be done.
A garden is really a succession of crops they grow over the course of the season. Tomatoes for example go in, in my area in mid-May. So, that area can be used up until mid-May for something else and then once mid-May comes I’m done. That area is used for the rest of the season. Other areas like where you plant radishes, they only take 3 weeks to come out so after three weeks you could reuse the area for another crop of radishes or you could put something else and like beans later on in the season.
It’s nice to maybe draw it out in a piece of paper or like I do just come out with a stick and start really marking the spots where you’re going to grow. The key is to utilize all of your space. You want to maximize your vegetable garden by getting as much out of it as you possibly can and a little bit of planning will help that tremendously. Let’s put this altogether in the form of a quick summary.
Establish your garden. Figure out where it’s going to go then map out where your plants are going to go and what pieces of the garden will be under use during different weeks of the upcoming growing season. Once you do that you’ll be able to utilize your entire plot no matter how small to its fullest.
