Hey there, today we are going to talk about updating the kitchen and coordinating it with an adjacent room. I get to ask this question so many times, because a lot of homes now have open floor plan like Ramon's in San Fransisco, California, Ramon writes, "My husband and I just bought our first home and it needs a little TLC. In our kitchen redo, we would like to include a kitchen island replace the cabinets and the outdated tile countertop. But we want to keep the appeal of an open room."
Now your two space seems very disconnected, so we are going to fix that right now. That's to just maybe bring an additional cabinetry on the wall where the dining table currently sit. So get rid of the peninsula you have, and replace it with an island. It can really maximize your space, and sliding that dining table to your living room area, that's going to connect that wall with the kitchen side of the room, making it feel like one big huge space. You say, you wanted an island and lucky for you, I know a lot about islands.
You can go simple like this one, it has a countertop and a cabinet underneath, or you can go even more functional and put seating around it. Everybody wants an island, because it's so functional and so convenient in a kitchen. Now for a wow factor, take a look at this glass top island. Oh my goodness! Now this really made a statement in space, and we do the granite from the rest of the countertop, and doing dual countertops in space is very dramatic, and also really good looking. Alright, another great way to update your space and also help tie in both rooms is to update your countertop, everyone loves granite countertop. They increase the resale value of your home, but they do require little maintenance.
Now if you are in the maintenance free, check out quartz, those are really durable countertops. If you want to go with the modern touch, concrete is hot. These are so cool in a space, they give a real modern rich energy and they are different. Think about paint that's the easiest way, paint both rooms the same color for one uniform cohesive look. Right now you've got that weird curve tile edge that kind of separates the kitchen from the other room. I suggest finding one uniform flooring throughout the living room and the kitchen, it will create flow and believe me flow is important.
Lastly matching accessories, you can do placemats or throw pillows. The same color as for your countertop, that will help tie everything together and make a great design. Well Ramon, you are so lucky to have such a huge space to work with, don't worry about messing up, it's just trial and error, go for it.
