Joani MacCubbin: Hi, I’m Joani MacCubbin, welcome to hisandhersgardening.com.
Tom MacCubbin: And I’m Tom MacCubbin, and today, we will be talking about bulbs and I have Joani’s favorite plant. There it is, look at that.
Joani MacCubbin: No.
Tom MacCubbin: Here is a picture of what it look like when it was flowery. Okay, let’s do a survey right now. How many people like paper-white narcissus? You love the fragrant smell, right? Just raise your hand; I can see you out there. Hey, it’s a majority out there looks like. Okay.
Joani MacCubbin: What?
Tom MacCubbin: But don’t you like it?
Joani MacCubbin: No I don’t. It’s a paper-white narcissus.
Tom MacCubbin: No, why don’t you like? She’s pretty, I like it. What don’t you like about it?
Joani MacCubbin: It stinks.
Tom MacCubbin: Yeah, well probably you want to put it up on the balcony or something out of the way.
Joani MacCubbin: You’ll be surprised I mean it disappeared from the landscape.
Tom MacCubbin: We have other nice bulbs here for doing things, like the amarillo, you should like that one.
Joani MacCubbin: That’s nice such a nice bulb. I do.
Tom MacCubbin: This one here is a flower apple blossom.
Joani MacCubbin: Yes, modernized.
Tom MacCubbin: Now, what are you going to do when it gets about like that, I get a pair of scissors for you.
Joani MacCubbin: Are these clean? Oh no. Okay, we’re going to cut it right back to the bulb, way down there. You can hold that, got it?
Tom MacCubbin: Yeah, thanks.
Joani MacCubbin: There’s a second one here so we’re going to clean that up too.
Tom MacCubbin: Yeah, but you do not have to leave these on. You can leave them on if you want to, if you want to get seeds, but most people don’t so we just cut ours often , toss them.
Joani MacCubbin: Well, toss the tossed not the plant.
Tom MacCubbin: Hold on, the plants are fine because we will keep them in a pot and then it will come back ah later on and flower. Won’t you show them the buds and everything coming out there?
Joani MacCubbin: Oh yes, this is a favorite of mine. And here, if you can see this, this is a nice new bud which is going to give us some flowers just like this one up here that you can see.
Tom MacCubbin: Yeah, this one here actually had four flower buds at the top, two of them have already finished and we expect to get that one. From that, this here is another plant, won’t you clean that up a little bit?
Joani MacCubbin: Oh that really needs some work
Tom MacCubbin: Yeah, but this is the way we keep them and till they start to come up in the spring, then we’ll clean them up, bring them outside and put them up in the bathroom.
Joani MacCubbin: Oh, look at the bud here and there’s another bud here.
Tom MacCubbin: I know one of them is that one. Yeah, the Amarillo’s is just a great plant for us to grow.
Joani MacCubbin: And what kind of a bulb is this?
Tom MacCubbin: Yeah, it’s a white light bulb, okay. How about tilling that little one over there?
Joani MacCubbin: Oh this another of my of favorites, so when I say this is my favorite, that particular one is but there’s others. And this is called a Felts Freesia. It’s great. We’ve got it on a, a little railing here, we have a lot of them and they’re beautiful.
Tom MacCubbin: We have some in the ground and in some in containers like this and look at the little flower buds coming out just so beautiful.
Joani MacCubbin: Lots of buds.
Tom MacCubbin: They will die back going into the summer, come back in the fall and then you have them right there. Now we have lots of other bulbs. I’ve got some pictures of some, we’ll let Joani hold this one here and talk about Cannas.
Joani MacCubbin: So when do you let me hold anything?
Tom MacCubbin: I know, yes look at the light bulb trick. These are Cannas we’ve been replanting here that’s why we’re in this spot; you can see some foliage coming up over there. But what we do is we just got to take them up and dig them up and then break up maybe some of the over portions but look at the new growth coming out on this Canna. Now I like the Canna, how do you feel about the Canna?
Joani MacCubbin: They’re on your side of the yard.
Tom MacCubbin: Now, okay, well that tells you something, these are probably not Joani’s favorite. But look at all the portions here. You know this one looks dead, there’s a nice shoot coming off there, we just plant that in the ground and here is the other one. Now you do like these, an awful lot.
Joani MacCubbin: Yes, now that you show me the pictures, yes they are. They’re Palladiums and they come in so many different colors, not a flower, it’s the leaf that has all the color for you.
Tom MacCubbin: This is Tea-O-leaf and this one here is one here is caroline wharton There’s other Spanning Munson, these little mini plants like that.
Joani MacCubbin: Yes, all named after people.
Tom MacCubbin: Yep, there’s the bulb, which is actually a tuber, but they will put Joani to the test. Which way do you plant it, do you plant it like that? Do you plant it like that? Or who cares.
Joani MacCubbin: Well, I do care so I actually plant it like this.
Tom MacCubbin: She got it right, yeah. But that doesn’t make a difference, you can plant them on you side or whatever. And we’ll grow a lot of these in containers. Yeah.
Joani MacCubbin: Don’t they say if you plant them upside down that you get more foliage?
Tom MacCubbin: Yes, it’s because it’s the bulb, not going, not going to be a problem
Joani MacCubbin: Oh, okay so we don’t want to just, no stress.
Tom MacCubbin: Yeah, so let’s give bulbs a try. They’re kind of fun, we like to grow—well, most of us like to grow lots of them.
Joani MacCubbin: Well that’s all for now.
