How to Plant Roses in Your Garden
Gord: Well it is the time of year where we want to get out there and start planting and I wanted to plant this beautiful Bing Crosby Rose which has a gorgeous orange color to it. So I brought in Bob Sparrow from Mike.
Hi Bob.
Bob: Hi Gord.
Gord: Now I really want to get this broods going on my rose here and I heard that myco riesel fungus really get sick going for us.
Bob: Yeah, myco riesel fungus present in most of our forest, you see our forest are doing very well but in urban sprawl, we tend to strip everything back and we remove all of those microorganisms that are living there. So what we are doing here today is trying to establish a root really quickly and as I was likely to say with myco riesel fungi it does not necessarily build the major root balls but we fill all the gaps, so we establish a root ball.
Gord: Make sure that you can get all the nutrients out the existing plants.
Bob: Absolutely, whatever is in there, whatever we are feeding is uptake to the plant.
Gord: Perfect. Now I see you conveniently broke your arms so you would not have to dig any holes here. So I am going to get down and I picked up the really nice Bing Crosby rose. It got a really nice, it is a hybrid tea, it is an orange color, and what I have got here is I have got one that got some really nice canes. I am going to take off a couple of the canes. I make sure I will probably take off this weaker one here. Now if I was going to use the mike product, do I stick it on the holes first, or do I put the plant in first
Bob: I think basic what we are going to do is put the plant in first because a lot of roots are going to grow out first. So we just want to make sure that we have contact to the root right away.
Gord: Okay, while on your sticks on settled down at the bottom, hopefully I got the right level.
Now this is a freshly potted rose, so it is going to fall apart a lot of the soil. I am going to try to get it done.
Bob: I want to have as much contact with the root system as we can.
Gord: So it actually works out well because the soil fell off, we get it right on there. Can I get you the whole dark rose and I am going to put a bit more soil around just so that I am going to bring it up to the graft union so that I get enough sunlight on the grafted portion, so that we can get some nice flowers. Now I got it indented here so that when the water comes on the rainwater it will not actually flow towards the rose.
Well, thanks Bob, we appreciate that.
Bob: Thank you Gord.
