The show had just been gone literally for about a week or so and it is time to put in some shallots, some onions, and a major of couple of other things, let us see how much time we have.
Alright, the first thing that I want to do, look at my garden it is a mess, I am just going to rake away the area that I know I want to put my onions here. You do not want to be planting if your soils is super wet and the way you tell that is just kind of come down to the soil, you grab it if it really sticks together and it is real shiny that means that there is too much moisture in it.
It looks to me like we are at borderline here but I think it is okay, it is not too wet I am not bringing any moisture out, we will be able to plant. One of the things that you want to be sure you do is kind of get rid of all the weeds and just sort of teal the soil out. Now, I am using a spade or you could also use a mini rake in order to do this. This area gets a lot of sun and this particular plants love a lot of sun.
I had been working on this particular bed for nearly 10 years so the soil is just terrific, I do not have to add very much in terms of nutrients. And of course, this is where I am eating out of so I am trying not to use any chemical at all.
So, what I got here is just a little bit of left over organic fertilizer from last year. Fertilizer really does not go bad. So, I am just going to take a little of this and sprinkle it in the soil and then I got this shallots here. Shallots are great. You know shallots and onions they are really easy to grow and you plant them almost exactly the same way. Unlike your bulbs that you plant in the fall that you want completely buried but this particular guys you do not. You want the very tip of the bulb just barely showing.
So, you put this in, I want it about six to eight inches between each bulb and I am kind of a stickler, I like this in very straight rows. Liquid products as you can find that, do that about every two weeks and that will help these guys to really give them a nice good boost. You want about a foot between each row, so if I start another row over here I do about a foot between those, plant those in something like that, again about six to eight inches.
Those will spout in just a matter of a week or two and then you just leave them in lots of sunshine, dry spells keep them watered otherwise these are good to go and I am looking forward to making some good shallots here in another few months.
