Hi, I am Steven Haskell for homegarden.about.com gardening. Today I am going to show you how to turn ordinary avocado into a driving plant for your home or garden. The avocado is shaped like a pear it has a leathery and rough skin on the outside, soft edible green flesh on the inside and a heart a seed at the center. People usually throw the avocado to see the way but we can use it to grow a whole new plant. For this project you will need, a soft avocado, small toothpicks, a glass, water, potting soil and the pot. First, we need to germinate to seed so that it is sprout to green shoot upwards and white roots down. Stab the seed with three toothpicks, space evenly around the seeds middle.
Next, secure the seed on top of the glass propping the toothpicks on the glass rim. Now, filled the glass of water so about half in inch of the seed is submerge. Finally, place the seed somewhere warm that is lots of indirect light and not too much direct light. In one to two weeks you will notice thin white roots growing down into the glass. You will also notice the green shoot cracking through the top of the pitch shield. Always maintain the same level of water by adding fresh water to the glass as it evaporates. You do not need to replace just add, when he green shoot has grown about 6 inches long it is time to plant the seeds in the pot.
Pot the plant and water every few days in small amounts. You want the soil to be damp but not soaking wet, also drainage is a key, so make sure that your pot has at least one hole at the bottom. If you leave in a warm climate, you could your avocado in an outdoor garden in a couple of months or when the roots are sturdy.
