All we are going to do now is move out to the farthest perimeter that you will ever shoot from which is beyond the three-point line. If you are a big person, you play the four or five spot, you never need to have your perimeter unless your coach gives you a green light. Any higher than a foot or so extended above the foul line perimeter. Now your perimeter is always going to be the farthest distance from the basket so that you can shoot the shot effectively and that your coach allows you to shoot. Most perimeter players will be out beyond the three-point line.
I prefer that when you practice three-point shots, that instead of toeing the line that you actually come about eight inches to ten inches farther and get out here toward the international three-point line.
Now I prefer that for several reasons. The degree of difficulty in the shot is no higher. Second of all, you are prepared for international competition. Third, psychologically a lot of defenders do not believe because you are not in the line that you might take the longer shot so they do not D you up initially. Fourth, it breaks the defense down and deflates them when you hit it. And one the last thing it does is it increases your confidence and your ability to want to shoot the three because you are never looking down at the line and trying to spot up. You are always comfortable coming out to a further perimeter and you never have to look down or worry about backing up or toeing the line.

The degree of difficulty again is no higher when you go eight or ten inches out. It is a matter of repetition. Remember always the principle, if you can shoot you can play period. The last thing I want to point out about a three-point shot is that the farther out you practice shooting from the basket the higher the degree of difficulty will become. This means you do not need to go underneath like you do on the first spot for the five spot warm up drill and make a 100 of these shots. There is no reason to do that.
As you move out, the degree of difficulty increases so your degree of shots that you take from each position should also increase. When you come out to your perimeter if you are a big man, a couple feet over the foul line perimeter or a perimeter player that shoots three’s, now you want to spend at least 30% of your practice time or your practice shots working on three pointers.
