Now we are showing this as team drills so the coaches can get something out of them. But players you need to understand these are things you can do on your own. All you need is a ball and some space to do it. What you do not want to use is an excuse. What you do want to use is your effort and your imagination to get the job done. If you do the job in practice you will have the job when you go to play.
Anthony is going to demonstrate for us how to practice these drills if you do not have teammates to throw it to. First you want to do is split the half court going to the right and then you are going to pick away. He gets the half he splits, no one is there, he does not worry about that, he picks. Now he is just going to practice with himself, you notice he spins the ball backwards. He pretends he has passed to a teammate. His working on the habit of splitting the half court and picking away.
What we are trying to develop is correct habits for doing drills. Now he is going to the V-cut pretending he catch at 80 and then pretend that he jump, shoot. You are on your own. V-cut, give the defender the same look and he jump, shoots.
All we are developing is foot work for habits. Foot work for choreography is that you have good game skills as a Point Guard. He has got the ability to dump into the post. Let us go to the left side. Pick, split the court left, pass and pick away. Good, now we have him back spin to himself so he does not have to chase the ball too far. You do not need to have great quickness, speed or size to be a Point Guard, what you do have to do is have great desire and above average intelligence.
That means you have to learn to think, recognize and read things that will take place on the court. You have to want to have the desire to be a creator and not just a player. Good, now let us go up here on the split the half court, reverse direction. All right, we are just showing three reps, you want to do at least five reps, maybe ten on your own until you get the hang of it. Go to the right, split the half court. There will be no pass for you, your teammate is not open. You reverse direction and then you go pick away. He splits, teammates not open, reverses direction, he picks away.
Now you notice where ever he moves, he stays away from the top of the key. Either once he has passing in reverse direction he stays away from the top of the key. The reason he does this is because it does not compact your offense. It does not crowd you with the defensive team all into one area. He is trying to give his teammates plenty of room to maneuver. Do the V-cut now.
You will get in condition by going through these drills. This is a work out that is why we call it a work out. We are developing habits, we are developing skills, we are developing conditioning and endurance. And as you continue to be persistent and consistent in your daily work ethic, you will also become a player.
