When we first started off, even you did not realize that we were doing quarter notes. Quarter notes are the easiest thing to play besides whole notes and so when we figure that every four beats, when the time is in four-four, it is how time is divided. If we play one note and go 1, 2, 3, 4; we have a whole note. If we do it where we do 2 notes we would have half notes so we go.1, 2, 3, 4. If we do 3 notes we would have quarter notes, which is where we are, quarter notes.
(Bass Guitar Demo)
So we will sub divide that so our right hand can get a little movement and a little work. We are going to sub divide that again and we would have 8th notes. We want to go; we would do 2 notes on the right hand per fret. So we would have.
(Bass Guitar Demo)
That is doing 2 fingers on the right hand, 2 movements per note that we are playing with our left hand. Same exercise, 1, 2, 3, 4; but only the right hand now is gone.
(Bass Guitar Demo)
Now, the next thing that we want to do is do that same exercise that we did the 1, 2, 3, 4; all the way to the 12 fret using your mention first to keep time and then secondly we are doing 8th notes which are;
(Bass Guitar Demo)
So it is 2 per notes that we play on our frets with our left hand. It is 2 hand movements with the right hand, so we are playing (Bass Guitar Demo). And we are going to talk about hand placement in another section but we will want to make sure that your hand is not resting on anything and we want to play, and each finger will play the note one time. So we got, per time that we move here, so I would demonstrate it.
(Bass Guitar Demo)
If we do that exercise to completion, we still want to do the same thing like we did when we were doing 1, 2, 3, 4; up to the 12th fret. So I am going to play it a little bit faster but you will be able to see how we have to do it.
(Bass Guitar Demo)
I am only going to go up to the other 5th fret. But actually as you can see the 2 things to concentrate on is placing out fingers firmly on the frets and when you play your bass you will say, “Wow if I play it, if I do not press firm I can not hear the note correctly.” Yes! That is why we want to do all of these exercises to a metronome so that you can make sure that you are getting the note. If you can not hear your notes you need to slow down and do not be shy about slowing down because we all have to slow down in order to be able to play. And like I said, this is basic stuff to build up your hand dexterity and it does not matter because the slower and the longer you practice the faster you get, it just happens. You know pretty soon you will be able to;
(Bass Guitar Demo)
You know I used to when I start to play that, I had to go;
(Bass Guitar Demo)
To make sure I can hear all the notes so I can gradually build up to that. And the way I do that is to finger dexterity. My fingers now where to go and familiarity.
