Hey! This is John with learningguitarnow and in this little video demonstration I’m going to show how play blues lead guitar using finger style. You see me play the slide guitar in finger style. You can also apply the same kind of techniques. We’re going to play blues on lead guitar so we’re going to take this and see, and we’re only going to use the pentatonic scale which looks like this.
[Demonstration]
That’s scale that you all know love that I because I played thousand of times hopefully. So anyway in pentatonic scale, we’re going to add a couple of notes to that.,9th fret on the G string, major 3rd. And also we’re going to have the 6th, 10th fret on the B string so you got.
[Demonstration]
From the B we’re going to have—and we also have the 9th note of the major scale to it and that is going to be a D note on the bottom of each string.
[Demonstration]
So you got this now.
[Demonstration]
Adding 3 notes to the pentatonic scale, 9th fret on the G string, 10th fret on the B string, and the 10th fret on the E string. And let’s go ahead and add the blues notes well. That’s going to be a couple of different places hanging on what position you’re using but this position is going to make 11th fret G string. So now we got.
[Demonstration]
What‘s cool about that is you got all this notes in row, you can use in a blues tune. Going down, so we got.
[Demonstration]
So there’s tons of cool licks you can do that. Let’s also take a descending blues scale which you can use as well and it goes like this. Start on the 8th fret, E string.
[Demonstration]
So from just using those two little patterns, you can do what is called licks. Here’s one finger style. You can always rake as in slide guitar. You can rake with your thumb like this as well.
[Demonstration]
So all that is just couple of different patterns using this hand, thumb, and I can use my 2nd finger for the next note and you can rake it.
[Demonstration]
So you have raked but sometimes I put my finger here. It helps mute the strings. So that’s--
[Demonstration]
So that’s using these two notes and also let’s take maybe a lick like this you got.
[Demonstration]
And then I have that major 3rd.
[Demonstration]
So those are really cool licks that you can do with a pentatonic scale. I’m just adding a few different notes to that. And once again, you can rake with the thumb, still come in a blues lick.
[Demonstration]
And you get a lot of control if you kind of feel. You turn that volume a little bit and you can get a mellow sound maybe. Play—I will spill that with bridge pick up change it to the neck pick up and you get a real nice warm sound.
[Demonstration]
And let’s kind of move that up normal Stevie Ray kind of hammer king position there. And then you can use your thumb to get a warmer sound, crank it up a little bit, dig in a little bit more with your hand.
[Demonstration]
