How to Play Blues Guitar: Scales
I want to show the scales that you are going to be using in order (guitar playing) to facilitate those wrists. The 1st one is called the pentatonic minor scale, penta meaning five; tonic meaning tone. In other words, this scale has five tones (guitar playing), and in the key of A at the A (key sample playing), C (key sample playing), D (key sample playing), E (key sample playing), and G (key sample playing) and if you will keep on going up A (key sample playing), C (key sample playing), D (key sample playing), E (key sample playing), G (key sample playing), A (key sample playing), C (key sample playing). You may have heard of this before, affectionately referred to as the Box hip; the reason that they call that is because we are working in the confines of a little four fret box, okay, so let me show this is the A minor pentatonic scale (guitar playing). Let me play that one more time (guitar playing) and in reverse (guitar playing), one more time in the reverse (guitar playing). Now, the root or the key note once again like what we have talked about in the movable rhythm patter is going to be based off the 6th string. So whatever note this is that is the scale we are going to be playing. In other words, this note right here the 6th string at the 5th fret, that is A. So if we play this pattern like this (guitar playing) that is A minor pentatonic, if we were to start it on the 3rd fret this playing is G and use that same fingering pattern 1st finger , 4th finger, 1st finger, 3rd finger 1st, 3rd, 1st, 3rd, 1st, 3rd, and 1st 4th again that is the G minor pentatonic scale (guitar playing). And, you can see how you can start building blues solos off of this scale (guitar playing), okay. And once again, anywhere that you might go on the neck remember that the 6th string the 1st note that you are going to play there is the root or key note. So in other words, if we are going to play it here (guitar playing) it is B.
