Hi I am Danny Gill from Lick Library and today I am going to show you some turnarounds in the key of A.
A turnaround is what happens during the last two bars of a blues. This signifies that we are about to start the blues all over again.
Here is our first turnaround in the key of A.
One, two, three, four.
So we are going to start of with a root note A, 7th fret of the D string and then we are going to play C-sharp on the 6th fret of the G string three times, move up to the 7th fret of the G string, playing the note D three times, move up one more half-step to the 8th fret, we will play E-flat three times and then we will play the note E on the 9th fret of the G string once. So far, we have done this and then we will end with F7 to E7.
In case you are not familiar with that F7 and E7 chord I just played. The F7 chord will have the root note F on the 8th fret of the A string then I also play on the 7th fret of the D string, 8th fret of the G string and the root note again is found on the 6th fret of the B string.
So we learn from F7 to E 7.
And here is turnaround lick number two.
One, two, three, four
So here, we are going to start on the 7th fret of the D string, that is our root note A and then we are going to placed C-sharp on the 6th fret of the A string and then with the middle finger, I am going to grab A on the 5th fret of the high E string.
Now we will go back to C-sharp, 6th fret of the G string. So far, we have done this. Now we are going to play 7G, 5A, 7G, still playing the high E string with my middle finger.
The next three notes, 8G, 5 on the high E string back to 8 on the G string, so far we have done this.
Now, we are going to play E on the 5th fret of the B string and then we will end with F7 to E7 once again.
So here is turnaround lick number two.
One, two, three, four
Here is turnaround lick number three in the key of A.
One, two, three, four
Here, we are going to start on the root note A, 7th fret of the D string and then we will play 5 on the D string and with the middle finger grab 5 on the high E and then we will go back to 5 on the D string. So those three notes together.
Now we are going to leave the 4th finger on the 5th fret of the high E string and we are going to move down to the 4th fret on the D string. So we will play 4D, 5 on the high E back to 4 on the D string, following this we will play 3 on the D, 5 on the high E back to 3 on the D string.
Finally going back to the 2nd fret of the D string, that note is E and then we will end with our same 2 chords, F7 to E7, so the whole turnaround would sound like this.
One, two, three, four
And there you have turnarounds in the key of A.
