Hi, welcome to lessonswithtroy.com, I'm Troy Brenningmeyer. Well today’s lesson is going to be a real cool one. I'm going to show you 36 licks in the key of D. now this isn’t in open D tuning, this is still in open G tuning. The standard Dobro resonator guitar tuning which is G-B-D-G-B-D, six strings to your 1st string. So open G tuning, but were going to be on the key of D. And these are 36 of my favorite licks. And the way that I'm going to structure this lesson is I'm going to cover a lot of licks here in open position, first of all. And then were going to move and I'm going to cover licks that are real movable and you can play them over your D chord or your G chord or you’re a chord. Then I’ll just show you some of my favorite licks that you might here in some popular songs. Okay, well we got a lot to learn, and I got about 8 pages of tablature with this one. So go ahead and print out your tab, set it on a stand in front of you. And we’ll get going here with 36 licks for resonator guitar in the key of D.
Okay, so once again, were in G-B-D-G-B-D tuning. Right. These licks are going to be in the key of D. so if you have a tablature, like I said, print it out. Set it on a stand in front of you and we’ll go ahead and get started here with lick number one. It’s going to sound like this.
Okay, so what I'm doing there is the first part of the lick. Your hitting this open 1st string, you're going to slide down 2 to 1 and pull off to 0. Now here's a part that you might be playing out a tune, you got to really watch this. This first note that 2nd fret 3rd string. It’s a place I always have to watch, I find sometimes I want to play it either too flat or too sharp. Just get use to playing that tune first of all. Then once you get use to doing that, then you start doing some of these licks. I'm sliding that down 2-1 to 0. And then 3rd fret 4th string. Open 3rd string. 3 to 0 on my 4th. That’s a pull off there. Then 1 on my 5th. Open 4th. Then slide up 3rd fret to get unison. Really watching your intonation there, make sure that you're in tune. You're going to do a nice little roll there, starts off with an open 1st string. Then you're going to do 3rd fret 5th string. Open 4th string. Open 1st string. Like that.
I've got my B’s to slightly flat here so that they blend a little bit better. Alright. So I'm having to compensate for anytime I want to do a unison note with either my 2nd string or my 5th string. I have to make it a little bit sharper than it might look like in tune.
Okay, let’s try this in the context of a backing track. If you bought the lesson, you’ll get a backing track here. So here is what this is sound like in the context with a band. This is just a little blues in key of D. 1-2-3-4.
Okay, now if we want to try to have that tempo. It sounds like this. 1-2-3-4. Then once again at full tempo. 1-2-3-4.
Let’s go ahead and check out the right hand part for this lick.
Okay, so here's the right hand for lick number one. It looks like this. Start off with a pinch with your thumb and middle finger there. Alright. Thumb-index-thumb. Right there you could do what's called pick blocking. You bring your thumb on through and you’ll mute out that 3rd string that is just ringing out. You got thumb and middle. Thumb-index- and then thumb, the left pull off. See how I just bring it on through just like that and it will mute out my 3rd string that was ringing out. Then thumb-index-thumb- and then I'm going to do this roll. Start with the middle finger-thumb-index-middle. Okay.
Go ahead and move on to lick number two.
