Hey guys, what’s up? It’s Aaron. I’m going to do a lesson for you tonight on a new song by Darius Rucker called “Don’t Think I Don’t Think about It.” It’s pretty popular now. I want to do a lesson, again a lot of requests for it.
Before we get to the lesson, I also want to mention the new website. It’s coming out, www.freeandeasyguitar.com. You can see the link for it on the page. I got a lot of cool stuff. It’s going to have a forum where you guys can chat, ask questions, ask for suggestions about stuff. It’s going to have links to stuff that I recommend like if you need string or anything like that, capos. It’s going to have a link where you guys can go to that, get the some ones that I recommend, the ones that I have used in the past.
It’s also going to have some cool stuff, movie themes. There’s a video on my webpage about it so check that out if you want, and open to suggestions about ideas for the page. So, if you’ve already given me your request or suggestion for the video, thanks, and if not, there’s still time. So, we’re going to go ahead and get along with the lesson but if you like this lesson, remember to bookmark and get ready for freeandeasyguitar.com. It’s coming out Christmas Day.
Now, this song has a little picking pattern at the beginning, and I actually don’t play the same picking pattern he does. I want to teach to you guys so it’s easy, you can play it in chords. The chords you’re going to need are an E. We’re on standard tuning, alright. The chords are E then you slide up here and do an F sharp minor, the middle finger’s not touching anything. I want to get it out of the way, like that. The third chord is a D and the last chord is an A.
So here he had a picking pattern but it follows these four basic chord structures. You can figure up the picking pattern if you want. But this right here, I’m just making an E, and the reason I’m doing it this way, I have my middle finger up here on the fourth string down, your G string on the first fret, I have my middle finger there. I’m going to have my ring and pinky on the A and D strings second fret. The reason I’m doing that is that whenever you slide up to the next chord, it’s F sharp minor, your ring and pinky has to be on the A and D on the fourth fret and this bar has to go across on the second, right there.
So you can make the E however you want. If you make it this way with your pointer finger on the first fret, you have to lift all of your fingers up to change for that second chord. So I just go ahead and make the E with my middle finger, ring and pinky. Now pointer finger doesn’t touch anything. So it’s D to A.
And what he kind of does is the strum pattern I like to do are on the intro is I do it like that down, up, down, up, up here to this F sharp minor, down, up, down, up, down, up, down, up, and the D, into the A for down, down, up, up, down, down, up, down, up. This sounds like this.
So again that is, you’ve got your E right here. You go down, pause, down, up, down, up, slide up here to the F sharp minor, you bar across the second fret, on all six strings, ring and pinky are on the A and D of your fourth fret, and you’re going to go down, up, down, up, switch to D, down, up, down, up, switch to A and you just do down, down, down, up, up, down, down, up, down, up, and then immediately go back to the E, so you have, it’s just basic chords. Take a look at that, these chords here for the intro and you can kind of feel this strum pattern up. These are the chords you can see, you have E, F sharp minor, E, F sharp minor, D, A.
So you might leave out that early, rest on E, and then again, you can leave the E out at once, you can go E, F sharp minor, D, A. So E, down, F sharp minor, down, up, down, up, D, down, up, down up, A, down, down, down, up, up, down, something like that.
So that’s basically what you play for the first three lines of the verse. That’s the intro, it’s that, then the first three lines of the verse are just E, F sharp minor, D, A. And then, “But I wasn’t turning around”, what goes into this is B bar, your bar across the bottom five strings, and your bar comes up here on the fourth fret. Your bar across the bottom five strings is the second fret, and this ring comes up here and does this little bar where you’re covering the D, G and B string on the fourth fret.
So that’s your B there. So “I wasn’t turning around”, and I just use down, down, down, up, up, down, up, and then do a D and then at this time, down, down, up, up, down, and then when it starts the, “Don’t think I don’t think about it”, I’m just going to a down, up, down, up, “Don’t think I don’t think about it” is A, “Don’t think I don’t have regrets”, F sharp minor. “Don’t think it don’t get to me”, slide down into the E, “Between the work”, D, “And the hurt and the whiskey. Don’t’ think I don’t”, A, “Wonder about. Could’ve been”, and then F sharp minor, “Should have been all worked out. I know what I felt.”
Now on that you’re going to go from an F sharp minor, get the bar on sixth strings, and the ring and pinky on the fourth fret of you’re A and D. Just slide down the bottom five strings with a bar. That ring and pinky will slide down from the A and D to the D and G. Your middle finger goes on the third part of your B string to make that B minor. “I know what I felt, and I know what”, A, “I said”, D. “But don’t think I don’t think about it”.
So alright, I’m trying to look at the bridge for you. Actually, the bridge is kind of just like the chorus but so the verse, one more time, all the way through.
[Demonstration]
“But I wasn’t turning around.” “No, not this time”… Chorus that’s an A, “Don’t think I don’t have regrets”, F sharp minor. “Don’t think it don’t get to me”, E. “Between the work,” D. “And the hurt and the whiskey. Don’t’ think I don’t,” A. “Should have been all worked out. I know what I said”, B minor. “But don’t think I don’t think about it”.
The strum pattern I’m using all the time is really just, once you get into the chorus, “Don’t think I don’t think about it”, I’m just using down, down, down, up, up, down, down, up, down, up, switch to F, down, down, down, up, up, down, down, up, down, up, E.
That little part there is just where “I know what I said, I know what I felt and I know what I said”, so I go on that, “Could have been, should have been all worked out. I know what I felt,” down, down, down, to A twice, to D once. So B minor, one, two, three, A, one, two, three on the D. So one, two, three, one, two, three, that’s how I do that part.
That’s basically the whole song. The intro is just E, F sharp minor, D and A. So take a look at those. Remember, these are beginner chords. If you want to take a look at a more specific way, you can always find tabs up there. But also, I’m sure you guys are probably going to ask about this autograph.
It says Jason Michael Caroll. I met him in the Rowley Airport. He was sitting across the plane, we just kind of talk. I don’t know if you get who he is but he’s a country artist. He sings “Alyssa Lies” and “Living our Love Song,” but he’s a really cool guy. So if you’re having a chance to go see him on a concert, go to get see him because he’s so down to earth and he’s really cool. So, that’s who it is, Jason Michael Caroll. And I figured some people would be asking me about that but that’s who that is.
I hope this lesson helped. And remember guys to check us out, www.freeandeasyguitar.com. It’s going to have a lot of cool stuff for you, December 25th, Merry Christmas. It’s going to coming out, and it’s going to be getting better as time goes on. Take care.
