Now, where I would really want to move into and talk about is a little bit of hi hat techniques. Opening and closing it while you are playing. If you notice on that last beat that I was playing, I opened it up a little bit and it made a sizzling sound, a little bit of a sizzling. And this again is where we come back to that actual footwork on the hi hat as I was talking to you about how you hold your toe or bear your arm giving it more weight with your heel down, any on which way you like it on opening it and closing it. Now, this is where that comes back into play.
So basically, what is going on here is that that simple beat that I showed you earlier with the 8th note pattern alternating quarter notes between the bass drum and snare drum. But, when you get to the count of the end of the four, one and two and three and four and… that is where you will open the hat, the hi hat. And then, you close it on beat one. So, it will sound something like this.

So now, we are going to go ahead and incorporate the bass drum and the snare just as we did before and then open the hat on the end of the four and close it on beat one.
[demonstration]
Now, what I would like to talk about on the hi hat technique is to open the hi hat a little bit more. We did it on the beat at the end of the four. Now, we are just going to open it on and of every beat and close it one every beat.
[demonstration]
And, that just helps you develop your playing a little bit more. Not with just your hands but also your right foot and left foot. It just kind of gets all four parts of your body moving. That is a good exercise for that.
