How to Play Drums: Holding the Stick

All right. So now, what I would like to talk you a little bit about is actually holding the stick. What I suggest is take the stick at about 1/3 the way of the stick and then take the pad of your thumb, put on the stick and then the first joint of the index finger. Let those connect and that is where you hold the stick, like that. In this area right here, that creates what is called the fulcrum and that is where a lot of the power come from when using the stick when actually playing it. And the rest of the fingers hold loosely around the stick. They do not grope the stick but loose. So, the stick just pretty much bounces off the other three fingers. It is also important that you will want to use your wrist when sticking. Try not to use your arms. What that will do is that it will wear you out. Your strength and your endurance go out the door really quick. So, it is important to use the wrist and where the fulcrum is. That is where the execution of the stick comes from. So it is something like this.

And again, if you are just starting out, it is going to feel a little bit weird. It takes a little time to establish this and feel comfortable with it. Just stick with it and it will get better. And if you have been playing for a while, you probably already noticed, but something like that.
