(Music playing)
This next section is on picking. There are going to be three different techniques that I am going to be showing you—three different picking techniques: The rest stroke, the free stroke, and tremolo picking, which is the finest one. You are going to like that when we get into that. But the first one that we are going to talk about is the rest stroke.
What the rest stroke involves is taking one of the fingers of the right hand and as you strum or pick through the string, you are going to rest on to the adjacent string behind it, like so. (Demonstration) Do you see how I am doing that? We were not strumming actually, picking through the string and onto the next. (Demonstration)
Now, when you are using your rest stroke, I suggest that you will always alternate between your index and your middle finger. (Demonstration) Let me do that again. Remember, alternate between your index and your middle finger. (Demonstration) What am I going to give you now is a C major scale. It is simply (Demonstration).
So, let me break that down for you. It is going to be the 5th string, third fret, 4th string open, 4th string second fret, 4th string third fret, 3rd string open, 3rd string second fret, 2nd string open, and 2nd string first fret. When you are done, it should sound like this. (Demonstration) Let me do that one more time, slowly. (Demonstration) And that is the C major scale. (Demonstration) That is how you create your melody.
Now, there are lots of different scales, obviously. I would suggest that you go to your local music stores and buy a scale book, but that is just one of them. You could practice your rest stroke technique by using that. C major scale. (Demonstration) Try to alternate those fingers if you can.
