Hey there gang, you're in guitar stage. Today we’re going to learn how to play “Gives You Hell by the All American Rejects. And I’m just going to jump into right away. I got my chart up on my screen here and I’m going to be referring to that. So for those you, that can just watch and get this, then awesome, do that. For those of you that need more help, stick around and we’ll talk about bits and pieces of the chords, the strumming all that good stuff. The chords that you need for this tune are C, A minor, F and G there’s the main chords we’re going to need. We’ll also need for the bridge we’ll need a D minor, and E minor and I really won’t be using them very much.
And I won't be playing the entire song through just because there’s a lot of repetition. So those of you are really interested in knowing all the chords and exactly how it goes. Go to your guitarstage.com to get the eBook there and you’ll have access to looking at this chart it will help you out.
So to do that for those of you, otherwise just listen up and we’ll play each part. So it's going to go something like this, here we go. This is for the intro, the verse, and the chorus this is the same chord progression it goes.
[Demonstration]
So you can see, I'm just playing the same chords over and over again. Here we go, here are the chords. For the intro, the verse, and the chorus we have C for 2 beats. [Demonstration] And by the way as you can see here on capo the 4th fret, you haven't already done that. If you don’t have a capo go get one, it's going to make this song a lot easier. So C [Demonstration] for 2 beats, A minor for 2 beats, [Demonstration] half for 4 beats. [Demonstration], so--
[Demonstration]
That’s how long you’ll hold each chord. And of course, I’m doing a funky little rhythm here that we may get a chance to talk about. But if not, you could just do.
[Demonstration]
Easy right? Okay, so that’s going to be the majority of the tune now the pre chorus is going to be something like this. Pre Chorus is going to do a G [Demonstration] an A minor, [Demonstration] a G [Demonstration] and an F7 [Demonstration]. Okay, so one measure G, one measure A minor, one measure of G, one measure of F7. [Demonstration]. Okay so here we go. I lost my place so pre chorus is like--
[Demonstration]
Okay, so we got the intro, the verses, the choruses, we got the pre chorus. So the only other thing, well we got 2 other things here , we got the bridge, and we got the ending. I’m going to go straight to ending first because it’s very similar to this chord progression that we’re doing. [Demonstration] that one.
Okay and it's going to go -- this is when they start doing the acapella part, where they’re just singing, just setting up the amplifiers and blowing away the [Demonstration]. One way of the couple there, they uptight couple. We’re going to do a C for one measure. [Demonstration] And F for one measure. [Demonstration] An A minor for 2 beats, [Demonstration] a G for 2 beats [Demonstration] and then back to C [Demonstration]. Okay so again, [Demonstration]. I’ll play it slowly here, it's going to go C for one measure, [Demonstration] an F for one measure, [Demonstration] A minor for 2 beats, [Demonstration] a G for 2 beats, [Demonstration] and a C for 4 beats. And again it’s going to go--
[Demonstration]
Okay now of course, in the video wherein the song, no one is actually playing – well, there is some sort of electric guitar way in the background there. But the chords are assumed and these are the assumed chords. So anytime we hear a melody, there are chords playing underneath it or there are chords that will support that melody and that’s the chord that I've interpreted here.
Before we go on any further here let me tell you about eBook here real quick, for those of you who didn’t know, you fast forward but if you haven't already, got to your guitarsrage.com download this eBook. It's really going to help with all these tunes and also gives you access to my chart section, which allows you to look at this same chart that I’m looking at. Breaks it down to intro, verse, chorus, turnarounds, bridge and all that stuff. You don’t have to write the chords down, you’ll have access to that, via website okay, so check that out. And the eBook also explains how to play a lot of these chords that you may not know how to play, also the strum.
The bridge is going to be something like this, it’s going do, it’s going to go [Demonstration] and then we have this mix measure [Demonstration].
Okay, and I’ll go over that in a minute. I’ll just play it, it's going to go
[Demonstration]. So you're going to play the E minor for 2 beats, A minor for one beat, C for one beat and back to A minor for a whole measure and F7 for a whole measure, [Demonstration] D minor for whole measure, [Demonstration] G for 2 measures, [Demonstration], so it's going to go something like this--
[Demonstration]
Okay, so break it down in those whole notes, so you understand when the changes are happening. But all the while you can be doing that kind of funky strumming I'm doing there. So that’s brings us to the strum, I'm looking at my time here, we’re hitting ready to run out of time, so let’s talk about the strumming. I do like a kind of a hybrid strum here or basically breaking it down to like an acoustic style. It’s going to go, it's going to go--
[Demonstration]
Okay when I’m counting it’s like [Demonstration]. That would be the easiest way to do it.
[Demonstration]
Slow down, it's going to go [Demonstration]. Get it? Good, alright.
