Roger: Oh I’m just down here Gary, I thought I would get a little stretch out before the show since this is a show on flexibility.
Gary: Well Roger that really is amazing have you always been that flexible?
Roger: Well quite the contrary as a matter of fact up until about the age of 33 or 34 I was extremely inflexible plus I was somewhat crippled. I had, had two major knee surgeries, two major wrist surgeries and my body was an absolute wreck.
Gary: Well there’s no doubt that you’re very flexible now in your golf swing which is awfully good too.
Roger: I took lessons from countless pros. The good news was I learned a lot about the golf swing, the bad news was I got so confused I didn’t know which side of the club to hold. The reality is there’s no one right way of swinging a golf club, however there are three things that all good player do none of which have to do with swing mechanics and one of those three is bar in a way the most important.
Gary: Alright you got me, what is that one thing?
Roger: Okay, it doesn’t matter whether it’s an upright swing plane, flat swing plane, neutral swing plane, cut wrist like Freddie Couples, convex wrist like Trevino, flat wrist like Nicklaus, flying elbows, tied elbows, elbows whatever the golfer is on top of their swing once the right hip begins to unwind, all good players come down to impact and they all arrive into what we call a two cheek position. In other words that ball strike we should be able to see chick one and chick two left shoulder a little bit to the left and the weight off the right side.
They’re all in that position with no exception, all of them. I would say that vast majority of high handicappers s That we see looks something like this. It almost like they returned to the address position impact with no hip rotation, no weight transfer and no shoulder rotation so when they tried to get in to the two cheek position they’ll end up coming over the top. There is no doubt in my mind that the average golfer playing today lacks the necessary flexibility to perform a fundamental golf swing.
They can’t in other words get down into the 2 cheek position separating their hips from their upper torso.
Gary: So you believe this is the reason why handicaps really haven’t come down on the last 30 years despite the remarkable advances in equipment and teaching.
Roger: Gary no doubt about it and as you know tour players are incredibly flexible as a matter of fact, research studies have proven that Tour players on average get around 50 to 100% more flexibility in their upper torso than the average person on the street.
Gary: That makes a lot of sense Roger but does all of this really affect the golf swing that much.
Roger: No question about it Gary we’re designed to have the shoulders over the hips, over the knees over the feet. From this angle we want to see the ear over the shoulder over the hip over the knee over the ankle. This is the design of our body but what happened on the industrial ace came of being our hunting and gathering methods changed radically and eventually the average lifestyle turns into something like this.
A guy gets up in the morning and goes in and has his breakfast, gets back up and goes right on back down into his car. Now he spends using around 9 o’clock to 5 in the office in conferences and telephone calls. Now what happens when we spent a large portion of our lives in this position, you think you’re relaxing but part of your body really isn’t. Now your legs aren’t getting any stronger, but the hip flexor muscles are actually keeping you upright.
If they weren’t being exercised, we would actually keel over and fall out of the chair there so there being work, what happens in our lifestyle now is so many people end up with an imbalanced primarily in their hips of their muscles. They end up with weaker legs and tighter hips. When the hips change position they all start to pull in this way and once they pull in the forces of our body go this way so we’ll se averted feet and we’ll see this person walking along.
Gary: Um-hmm.
Roger: Or if the hips get too overworked and they get too old or tired and what had you, they’ll start to go under this way and they’ll start seeing this person across the road. That’s why the average person now they get up here, now they try to play golf and guess what? No leg strength to support, no upper body flexibility and they go out trying to take some lessons or trying the new state of the art drive and for most people they pretty much have a hard time with it.
Gary: Roger, do most golfers know how to stretch properly?
Roger: In my opinion the average person is really stretching very incorrectly. I ask everyone of my students if they stretch and you know it’s amazing how many times that they do and they start showing me some of the— so they put their club behind so doing this or like nearly always seeing that they’re wasting their time and certainly not getting such results.
Gary: Well can you explain to all of us what you mean by stretching incorrectly?
Roger: Sure, most golfers stretch segmentally, they’re only stretching one part of the muscle, muscles work in chain, if you just stretch 1 segment of that chain you would probably feel very good for about an hour or 2 but sooner or later if the rest of that chain hasn’t been stretched or exercised and it happens to be tight I assure you that that muscle that you just stretch will usually come back.

Now take your right foot and bring that over your left leg and take your hand and bring that directly behind you, try to get the right hand right in the midline of your body.
Now take your left arm, make a straight just like a bar, press against the right leg there. Tommy in this starting position, this is about I think where you were how far you could turn your shoulders back just a couple of years ago?
Tommy: That’s exactly right Roger, this is my starting point now.
Roger: If you can’t get your shoulders in line with your extended left leg that mean’[s that you lack the necessary flexibility to make a 90 degree shoulder turn but look where Tommy now has become. Let’s show them now Tommy, see right now Tommy can get his shoulders actually pass his extended left leg. He’s actually about 100 degrees shoulder turn getting the shoulders in line with that leg would be about 90.
Okay that’s fantastic and I can’t believe how much range of motion you developed just in the last couple of years now.
Tommy: I can’t either but I ‘m doing it.

Roger: Muscles work in pairs for example we have biceps and triceps. When the biceps contract the triceps expand and vice versa. It’s called a reciprocal enervation that’s how the body works. In the golf swing, when the upper body weight begins to shift and rotate these muscles here are the quadriceps and the hip flexors begin to really contract just like my biceps were doing a moment ago.
Well the muscles behind here the hamstrings and the gluts begin to expand just like the triceps. Now the reverse is happening upstairs in the upper trunk and that is the chest muscles expand and the back muscles contract. So the body in this halves is much like a towel you’re trying to ring water out.
Gary: Roger it’s obvious you know a lot about what happens during a golf swing. Can you tell what part of the body is inflexible or tight by the swing faults the golfer has?
Roger: Absolutely for example if we have a person who say who has tighten their hamstrings. Right when the upper body weight begins to load into the right side, if that hamstring is tight we’ll normally see a straightening of that right leg and so you have elevation of the hip. If we get a person who is overly strong and dominant in their hips much like bicyclist, runners, and skiers who get real strong down there, they tend to lose the rotational capacity and usually when go to about right here, they’ll tend to slide the hips this way creating an upper body reverse.
