In all other sports, we have to react to the ball. In golf, the ball has to react to what we do. In all the other sports that we have played throughout our lifetime, we are always reacting to the ball, that ball is always moving. So we do not have time to think, we just naturally react to what is happening to the ball.
Let us take a look at some other sports.
Let us look at tennis. Here we are, we are getting ready to play tennis and somebody hits me a shot on the right-hand side of the court. So I have got to run over and hit a 4 hand shot back over. So, what am I thinking about? Well, in golf, we would be analyzing exactly how far we have to move, what position are riskier in because the ball is still, but in tennis, can you imagine? If we did that in tennis, we would never hit a shot. I am going over to hit a 4 hand shot in tennis I my mind’s eye, I already see the shot I am going to hit. I have looked to where my opponent is, where the ball is going to hand-up. That computer in my mind analyzes all that and I hit a shot back down the right hand side of the court because my opponent is still over in the left hand. I did not have time to stop and think. I reacted.
How about baseball? That is another sport where the ball is always moving, I have got a glove here and I have got a ball. Now, can you imagine if somebody hit me a fly ball then I had to stop and think about all the mechanics of how to catch a baseball? Or someone hit me a grounder and I went over and picked-up and I had to stop and think what position I was in before I throw the ball the first base? We are always reacting in every other sport.
Golf paralyzes most people because here is the ball and is looking right back at us. We are getting up here to hit a shot and we have got 8 million thoughts now going through our minds what we are supposed to be doing, and the ball just sits there and looks right back at us.
Now, the big difference is in golf. we have got to put our mind to work. On all the other sports, we are just reacting to what the ball does to us. But in golf, we have to prepare our mind to react and move our body through the golf shot, and that is the big difference between golf and all the other sports.
