Drill #2: Distance Drill
One of the ways to develop a feel for distance is to putt at different distances from the same position and Kent is going to demonstrate now. We have three lines here, and when you come out to practice, you always want to practice some short putts, some medium-sized putts, and some long putts. And this is a great drill to develop feel.
Now, you cannot go out in your putting green and put down lines, but you could use something like putting tees down or putting clubs at every three feet, but this is one of the best drills I know in working with people on trying to teach them their pace.
Try to get the feel of the green. Oh, great putt! He is going to putt to the second line which is going to take a little more length and a little more pace in his swing. Oh, you are pretty good, partner!
Now, he is going to putt the long putt way down there. Oh, great putt! Is that big! Great putting!
You see, drills like this would teach you how to putt for distance. They will give you a good feeling of your stroke. The length of your stroke and the pace of your stroke will always determine the distance that you are going to hit the putt.
Putting pointers for the Distance Drill
Practice putts from different distances. Putting from greater distances will help to teach a proper putting feel. Always practice a minimum number of putts from each distance—five, ten, fifteen feet, etc.
