Drill Number One: Line Drill
In learning how to putt, you want to use a lot of drills because drills teach you the importance or the proper fundamentals of what we have just covered. On short putts like this, I have put a line down here so that you can visualize the putter path going straight back and straight forward on a short putt.
And we are going to work on fundamentals. I always have my students stand out very close to the hole so they can get the proper feel and the proper motion of the swing. On short putts, you simply want to take the club back, straight and come through straight right down the target line toward the hole. Straight back and straight through.
Now, this is the proper procedure on teaching somebody on short putts. If you noticed, during the putting stroke itself, we want to stay very, very still. The only thing that is moving really are our shoulders, the hands and the arms and the shoulders are working with one unit with the putter shaft. The ball is up front, our eyes are over the target line, the putter face is square to the ball and to the target line, we simply make a stroke back and forth with the putter face chasing after the golf ball. You notice the back swing and the forward swing are about the same temple.
On a putt of about10 feet or so, as we move it back the club head is going to move inside the target line but is going to come back square to the ball and then back down the target line. So we have got a little putt here. See if we follow the same principles of taking the club back on a longer putt taking a little to the inside, it will get back to the ball square and as I follow through down the target line, I can take care of this 10 footers because I know the principles.
On short putts, short putts we want to take the club face back square, straight back, keep it square. On longer putts, we want to take the club back inside the line back to square and back down the target line.
Putting Pointers for the Line Drill: On short putts of 10 feet or less, both the back and through motion should be on the target line. On long putts of farther from 10 feet, the back swing should come slightly inside the target line.
