What is good piano playing? And of the converse is what is bad piano playing? Good piano playing generally involves being able to express one’s musical emotions, being expressive, being intelligent in the performance as many of the music critics write, but at the same time considering the basics. One needs to play with the good tune very evenly and with fine control at the keyboard. So for instance, playing a piece even simple like Fur Elise by Beethoven that many people like to listen too, can be played in very many different ways.
First of all I’m going to demonstrate bad piano playing which is not expressive, uneven and well I hope this not offensive but I try a little bit and after which we’re going to just oppose that with some more controlled piano playing and see how you would like each one of them. So this is what I try to play as bad piano playing of Beethoven’s Fur Elise which is just getting all the notes. [Demonstration]
Now, what’s the problem with that? Of course it wasn’t mechanical, uneven and also unexpressive. Well, it sounds more like a robot that’s out of order, that’s playing it. So, perhaps how can we add some humanizing aspects to touch the hearts of our audience? Maybe we can try this. [Demonstration]
