This lesson is gonna be on alternate bass picking, if you are a folk, or a kinda blue grass guitarist, you like that kind of music. Some Johnny Cash stuff, you’ll hear it. But you’ll recognize it when you hear it. If you have something called alternate bass picking. What that means is, it’s basically on the name, you’re alternating the note, the bass note that you pick. So alternate, alternate bass picking is you’re alternating the bass note that you pick, okay. So, certain chords have certain bass picking patterns. This lesson is good if you just come off of the, the lesson on picking within the chord because we talked about the bass notes for each of those chords. We talked about after playing the G chord, or an E chord, you’re bass note is gonna come from this low E string. No, it’s not always, there’s always an exceptions, but for the most parts. G, G minor, G major, E, E minor, E major, E sus, all that, the bass note is gonna come from this low E string. If you’re playing any D chord, your bass note is gonna come from your third string down from the top, that’s your one, two, three, four string up from the bottom, your four string, and that’s the D string. If you play anything else it’s a C, whether it’s an A, a B, you know whatever else. That is gonna be generally covered by your bottom five strings with your bass note coming to A. Now what I want you to do, I don’t know on the top of my head. I’m just kind of winging these videos to give as many as I can to you. I don’t know for a fact which bass notes you pick, but I’ll have the information below this, if you’re on the webpage. But, alternate bass picking is sounds something like this. Now, what I’m doing there is I’m playing a G chord, okay, you don’t move your fingers up here. This stays stationary. First thing you’ll gonna pick is the G note, which is the low E string, then you strum down – up, then you pick the third string on top of your D string, you pick it, and strum down – up. So… now this is gonna be really frustrating for you when you start for the first time. I can remember when I took this for the first time in my guitar lessons, I took a few guitar lessons when I first started, and then. Quit that, I started teaching myself, but, in the first couple of lessons that I did take, alternate bass picking was that my guitar teacher Tony Hammer and Mike Coolidge showed me. And it was really frustrating for me, because I didn’t have the picking accuracy yet. It’s hard for me to hit this string, strum down – up, and hit another string. So don’t get frustrated, keep at it, if it starts to get frustrating, set your guitar down, get something to drink, eat, watch TV, relax, and then pick the guitar back up. You wanna make sure you keep it fun. You don’t ever want to be a chore, alright. So that’s for the alternate bass picking practice, I want you to try the G chord and pick the low E string, the top string, strum down and up, then pick your D string, which is your one, two, third string up on top. Okay, practice that one. Also I want you to practice the, let’s go with the C, okay. Let’s see. So with this one here, you’re at C chord formation. The first note that you’re gonna pick is your second string up on the top, your A string, which is the C note, because you’re ring finger is on the 3rd fret. See A open, A sharp, D, C. So it’s a C chord. Pick that string there, second string down, this one. Strum down – up, and then the next note, you’re gonna pick your four string, one, two, three, four string, your D string. Start slow, until you become comfortable, and you can start to speed it up. So, if there’s any other chord that you wanna figure out the alternate bass picking to, then check the info below here on the webpage, FreeandEasyGuitar.com. If you’re on youtube, go to the webpage, check it out. And hopefully it will help you getting into alternate bass strumming, and bass, alternate bass picking, alternate bass strumming, you know, it’s basically the same thing. But, hopefully this will help you and if there’s anything else that you guys need, then check out some other lesson, hopefully I covered, if not, then hope to get to in the future. So take care.
